How hard does my class schedule look?

Incoming freshman, biochemistry major, pre-med. I'm trying to fit in 2 science classes this year because I want enough room to study for the MCAT junior year without learning the material at the same time (except for Biochem or other upper-level biology classes). I also don't want to take any science classes during the summer because I heard med schools don't like that.

Fall semester
CHEM 1311: Gen. Chem (3)
CHEM 1111: Gen. Chem Lab (1)
SOC 1301: Intro. Sociology (3)
RHET 1302: Rhetoric (3)
PHYS 2325: Mechanics (3)
PHYS 2125: Mechanics Lab (1)
MATH 2414: Integral Calculus w/Problem Lab (4)
LIT 3311: Anime (CV class) (3)

Total hours: 21

Spring semester (what I'm thinking of doing)
CHEM 1312: Gen. Chem (3); Lab (1)
PHYS 2326: Electromagnetism and Waves (3); Lab (1)
PSY 2301: Intro. Psychology (3)
STAT 3332: Life Science Statistics (3)
HUMA 1301: Exploration of the Humanities (3)

Total hours: 17
Don't know which of these classes I should take as CV classes

Should I drop the Anime class first semester for a lighter load and take 2 CV classes second semester? Or is Anime a pretty easy class/blow-off that I don't need to worry about it too much (I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but that class seriously SOUNDS like a blow-off)? Though that would mean I'd have to take Honors Humanities, and I would sorta like to take the regular class to have Ingrao (who I've heard is an easy A)

Although, if it makes anything easier, I got an A on my Calc BC class and a 5 on the exam so Integral Calculus shouldn't be anything new (I didn't take both credits because let's face it: med schools don't care). I also got an A and a 5 in AP Statistics, and I have a pretty solid background in Chemistry and English in high school.

Hi! I am an incoming freshman too but while im not a bio chem premed i am a neuroscience premed also in CV. I feel that your spring semester is definitly doable while your fall semester may be over the top for a freshman (although i am only speaking from the opinions of other premeds i have talked to). Ive heard anime was a pretty easy class and will definitly be interesting if you like anime but it may not be worth busting ure schedule up to 21 hours for. Now im going to be an incoming freshman too but here are my ten cents on your situation. I would sub out anime cv for a core class cv. I myself decided to take humanities cv to avoid taking an unneeded elective that may potentially inhibit my performance in other classes by eating away my time. Sure it might not be as easy as Ingrao (who i wanted as well) but ive heard humanities in itself is an easy class and if you put effort ofc the A will come naturally. Did you not AP out of rhetoric? Also if you got a 5 in BC why take integral cal (even tho itll prob give u a GPA advantage) i also got a 5 on BC calc but i opted to credit out of both sections of Calc 1. Med schools do like to see people take a math class in college to see how they will actually perform in a college class as opposed to AP crediting out of everything (source from a UTSW admissions person) which may be your reason to take integral calc but here’s another route i may suggest but is entirely up to you: i opted out of calc using my BC credit and will instead take statistics with a life science focus. Med schools are starting to focus more on stats now than calc and i heard from a lot of med school students that taking stats in college has definitly helped them with their med school coursework. Just suggesting another route but again entirely up to the student which route to take. Also remember your freshman year is the year ure going to want to start forging relationships with your professors and fellow peers. You’ll need them for ure med school application and your relationships forged freshman year may very well be your life lines in your undergrad career. In addition med schools also look for people involved in their community and school. Instead of having a jam packed freshman year with 21 hours why not lower the course load to 15-18 hours get involved in a bunch of organizations and with the faculty and do a lot of volunteering at places/activities that interest you. This will help balance your academic life with things of interest as well as round you up better for med school apps. Remember, although med schools do like to see students do well managing a heavy courseload and maintaining a high gpa and leadership roles you have a lot of semesters after the first fall to show them what youre made of. Sometimes starting with 15- hours while getting involved in your school and healthcare community and then raising that courseload to 18+ then 21 while doing the same extracurriculars wil have a better effect on your gpa and overall volunteerism/leadership. In addition to the whole two science class things its not imperitive that you do that but it is suggested but many have told me that not doing so immediately fall semester wont necessarily kill you although you do have to work harder. I myself am taking 15 hours fall semester while trying to get involved in organizations like hosa and AED and i will boost that up to hopefully 18 hours in the spring. I was unfortunate and could not find a way to fit both physics and chem in my schedule fall semester. Sorry for the rambling and long post i just wanted to share what i learned from attending various premed symposiums and converions to a fellow comet freshman. I hope this helped!

Correction i chose to do intro to psycho cv* sorry changed my schedule since orientation. I did this because i felt an honors class would help me prepare more for the behavioral science component being added to the mcat. I did not get Ingrao for humanities tho i got brewer

The only problems with rethinking my CV class are that the remaining ones either don’t interest me at all (Criminology?? Seriously??), have prerequisites only a junior can have fulfilled, don’t have any more room, or don’t fit in my schedule.

As for the humanities, I’ve heard good things about Towner (CV) and that she’s not really hard if you put in the work a bit. So I’ll see how I fare until census day and if I decide that the courseload is too much then I’ll just drop the Anime class and double up on CV classes next semester.

I never took AP English, so I can’t place out of Rhetoric. And about taking Integral Calculus again, like I said: I want to boost my GPA. Plus, I heard that AP material usually pales in comparison to actual college courses.

I just think that Anime was just a “gimme” class. But if I actually have to WORK seriously in that class, then I might as well reconsider.

Haha yeah i figured you would want a gpa boost on calc i was just suggesting trying stats since med schools seem to be gearing more towards that kind of math and it will only be a 3 hour class instead of a 4 hour class with a practice session and test session and will also show the med schools that you can excell at math if you maintain an a+ in the subject. Ive heard that about AP courses too so just another route i was suggesting to fulfill all ure requirements and beyond! Did you try checking the syllabus for anime or previous anime classes and the class evaluations? Maybe that could give you an idea. Also there are 1 hour reading cv sessions if you still want to enroll in a cv class but dont want to waste time in a 3-4 hour class you dont like…but then again you would have to make up the 2 hours later along the way. Good luck making your schedule though! Its good to talk to another premed student (even though im sure therell be a large amount to talk to once classes start xD)

^Thanks. Man, scheduling for classes is a b****. I emailed my advisor to change my schedule at least 7 times this summer

Gen Chem I and lab I are really easy. Sign up for PLTL.

You’re taking the easier calculus sequence. Should be fine.

Anime may be surprisingly difficult; no sure about the professor.

Mech can be easy or hard depending on your prof. Expect to spend tons of time on labs.

Rhet is basically a joke.

I’m a biochem rising sophomore there. I would take my advice before another freshman’s, but that’s just me. (:

Actually, I just found out that 21 hours isn’t allowed, so I just took my full AP credit and I won’t be doing any math this semester.

Gossin is teaching Anime. Have you heard anything about her?

I have Frazier. How’s he?

Seriously? That’s quite a shame. I was hoping I’d get a meaningful class where I’d actually learn something.

21 hours might be allowed if you speak to your advisor. I know people taking 23 this semester, which is easier if you have research credits or something like band.

With easy HUMA classes, you can probably swing 21. That also includes UNIV as 1, and that’s a nothing class. I would encourage you to take math, not humanities, if you are choosing between classes.
