How hard/easy is HKU admission for International Students?

I am an 11th grade student in China studying in a Canadian BC certified international school. I am really tempted to apply to Canadian Universities but my family says its too far and the airfare for one person is very expensive. So, just in case it doesn't work out I will choose a uni which is closer to home (Indonesia), and I fid myself really considering HKU. How hard is it to get in? If you have gotten admitted please give me your stats. Do they look at ALL your grades? Because my 9th and 10th grade averages were 72 and 70 respectively, but I believe that my grades are really improving this year and hopefully the next. Also, do they really care much about extra curriculars? Are my TOEFL and IGCSE marks good enough?

Toefl (iBT)-84 (planning to retake it in the end of grade 11)
IGCSE (took it in grade 10) - 3A*,3As,1B,2Cs

anyone reply??

Hi willa96,

Been talking about this elsewhere as well, I’m a US educator at a recent conference for international students from China, India, Korea and other countries, and the students there strongly advised other students in your positions to look at many different countries. I’m not sure, but I think the airfare for flying from China to Europe is relatively inexpensive, plus European universities especially in countries like Germany and Switzerland tend to be cheaper than in the US and Canada.

By consensus, the international students felt that Germany was actually the best country to study overseas, especially for students from India and China. It’s not too expensive, the education is world-class, the chances to incorporate technology are great, the business contacts are awesome and you even have the opportunity to work in world-class European firms afterward, with your tuition taken care of.

You’ll of course have to learn German, but virtually everyone agreed that the language isn’t too difficult if you’re motivated, and if you learn even just some basic German in China, Germany itself will help you learn more. Many of the Chinese and Indian students at the conference had attended universities in Germany, and they were all very happy with the choice.

Other countries that were considered great for students from China were Switzerland, France, the Netherlands and Sweden, as well as some universities in Belgium and Norway, even a few in Russia, central Italy and Spain. So long as you’re willing to work hard, learn the language- German being by far the most important, though also learning French or Spanish can help- and develop your skills, all those places are great opportunities for you. Good luck with your search!

Thanks for answering my question!
Firstly, you didn’t really answer it. I was talking about Hong Kong U the whole time. But secondly, thanks for giving me a wider variety of options! I still have 2 years till I graduate so I still have a lot of thinking to do and I’m still open to all the opportunities. I’m actually considering both France and Germany, because I have actually been dreaming to go to Europe. How “not too expensive” are the universities and cost of living there? How much French/German should you know before actually studying in a university there? Do universities there have programs in Journalism? Because I’m thinking about being a foreign correspondent  Sorry to bother you to all these questions.

@donatu thanks lool, i studied german for 2 years,u can say it may have some similarities with english, anyway Germany is more famous in their engineering course compare to others

HKU is rated at one of the top 4 universities in China, next to Beijing U, Taiwan U and TsingHua. HKU is very selective in their students. You will need to be in the top .1% of your class to have a chance to get in. 3 of my cousins graduated from there and one of my cousins studied there recently as a foreign exchange student (from UC San Diego). It is one of the most elite schools in Asia and thus you will need top grades and top test scores.

that really depends on your choice of faculty
in my opinion it’s not hard unless you’re aiming for law/medicine

It depends on your major.
Lawyer, doctor etc are regarded as safe bet in HK as the road to middle class, so HKU law, MBBS (and actuarial science) are extremely selective!

HK engineering and science industry are weak, so if you are targeting engineering and science program in HK Big3 (HKU/CUHK/HKUST), you should be fine as local kids just don’t like it.

For other non-vocational subjects(eg. arts), local parents just hate those. So even HKU has been admitting its community college HKU SPACE associate students to improve its admission statistics.

Hi donatu,

from what I heard, studying in Switzerland is very expensive! German universities are great but German grammar is rigorous as compare to English

i got around 60’s for my secondary and post secondary report card and still managed to get into hku(bba).
i am an Indonesian too

@ expertelder… which year was this? last year HKU and the other Unis in HK did a double co-hort thing. So it depends which year you took admission with 60’s for HKU BBA, or how long ago it was.

I got conditional offer from HKU for 2013 sept intake

@ expertelder…congrats!! If you don’t mind what are the conditions you require to achieve? And when will your results come out and did you pay your deposit? Did you give SAT results to HKU?

I gave my aslevel result, my alevel predicted grade from school and also my sat

My offer came out one week ago

Predicted grade-a*aaa
Conditional offer-aaa

Hello…i want to apply in HKU(for engineering).I got 7As and a C(in english) in my IGCSE and 3As and one A in my GCE A Level.I have 1840 in my sat which is quite low and i have served the school cricket team for 6 years.I also participated in national olympiads(maths and astro) and stood 2nd and 7th respectively…do i have a chance?
