How Hard is a Business Major

How much labor/difficulty is involved in a business major?

It's easy.

this depends way too much on your school and major. i can imagine an accounting degree from wharton would take ALOT more work than a marketing degree from colorado state. some schools, like CMU and MIT focus alot on math which could be tough depending on how strong you are in that area.

Your grades will most likely depend on how the rest of the class is doing. If you have competitive classmates, it will be harder to get the grades. That being said, the top schools will be tougher than the lower tier schools.

Also, any subject can have tough professors and tough, tricky exams.

I attend Washington University in St. Louis, and I'm pretty good with math. I plan on doing marketing.

bump......................

Marketing is not math intensive, I doubt that skill set would benefit you much in your marketing classes.

Thanks, but how hard do you think it would be????

bump........................

id say its easier than most other majors like engineering

but aren't even the math "intensive" majors like econ/finance/accounting not even THAT bad as far as math is concerned? maybe alot of numbers, but i can't imagine there's tough math. most (not all) business school require you to take business calc or calc, and then like a stat class.

I don't really care so much about the math part. I'm just worried about the academic intensity and competition present within business schools, such as Washu's Olin. Anyone know anything????

Econ can become very math intensive (may require linear algebra and beyond). Finance and accounting in a business program, while quantitative in nature, are not meant to be all about math. Financial engineering, however, is a different story.

vtoodler, there will be competition at top schools like WashU. But IMO, it's better to attend a competitive, highly recruited school than try to be the best at a non-competitive, no-name school.

My friend went to wharton and he said surprisingly, the hardest classes at wharton were about as difficult as a hard AP class in HS. Our HS is a great public school but its no stuvy or andover. It shouldn't be that hard because you're learning what you want to learn right? At least that's the way I look at it. I have a hunch I won't be feeling that way next year but oh well.

At Lafayette College we can only major in Business/Economics, they can't be separate. I find the business aspect of it educational and "fun", don't get me wrong it's hard work but it's something I have a passion for. Economics however I dislike greatly and wish I never have to take another macro/micro class again. So to touch upon if a business major is hard, it definetly depends on your school, but I also think it depends on your feelings for it. If it's something your just doing becasue you know it will make a lot of money. Then it might be hard for you. But if you enjoy learning about it then I bet it would seem easier.

With a business major, the actual "toughness" is not found so much in the curriculum, but in the competitiveness of your job prospects... many a student can go in and get a 3.0 GPA, but if they haven't developed leadership and social skills along the way, they will be left behind when it comes time to be recruited into the awesome jobs.
