How hard is it to get into Harvey Mudd College

I am thinking about applying to Computer Science/Engineering. I am in instate and a girl. Despite it being Harvey Mudd, how competitive is it for girls? My stats are slightly below the average Harvey Mudd Stats so I want to know my chances before I decide to go for it.

I think Harvey Mudd women are pretty self selecting, so acceptance rates might not be very telling of selectivity. It’s probably somewhat easier for women because HMC wants a decent gender balance. Just speculation.

You can Google “Harvey Mudd Common Data Set” and see the number of female applicants and the number accepted last year. You can’t see stats by gender, but you can see that in general women have a better chance of admitted.

@heyitsricha HMC’s president is quite well-known in academic circles and in the media She really is aiming for 50-50 at HMC. I would definitely apply. You never know.

Mudd is 50-50. But the women being accepted aren’t unqualified – my D had 800/780/800 super scored SATs and 2 800 subject tests.

if your stats are slightly below average then it probably really depends on what else you’ll be bringing to the college and how well you’ll fit. Harvey Mudd seems to care a lot about fit. Have you visited? What attracts you to their program? Also, do you have things in your application that will make you a desirable student, such as extraordinary leadership, talent, or an unusual life story? All things the admissions committee will take into consideration.

They also want to be sure you can do the work and are willing to work as hard as you need to at Mudd.

got a 32 on the ACT. 770 on Math 2. I have a 3.83 UW and a 4.1 W.
Pretty good leadership roles (started science national honor society in my school), I’m the media executive director of a start-up in journalism, ECs (had an internship with USC Keck), also in the tennis team, and some other stuff

should i go for it?

Absolutely @heyitsricha

Sure.

how would my chances look like if i went for it?

From 2 years ago, 23% of the women who applied got in. However, your ACT composite is a point below the 25% mark. Maybe a 10% chance if the rest of your app is really strong? That is very much a ballpark, though. If it feels like the right school for you, I think you should apply.

@heyitsricha And, if you have genuine interest (and this is your first choice), you need to convey this as well.

I’m really interested in attending Harvey Mudd. The more I learn things about the campus and the environment there the more I want to attend it, but i dont know if i should go for it because it seems that based on my stats, i may not be such a competitive applicant

What have you got to lose? You have a shot, I think you should apply.

@intparent

i thought the stats are from 32-35…it’s 33 being the lower range of 25th percentile???

i’m also an international female from canada applying for ed 2…do you know if there are a lof of canadian applicants interested in this school? from my school i’m the only person applying but that being said, do they also have a quota for internationals? and does it matter if one is “in state” vs “out of state” being that it’s a private institution?

Matter for what? Finances? No, as a private it is irrelevant.

In-state/out-of-state does not matter as it is a private college. I don’t know if they have a quota for international students or how much Canadian interest there is – my sense is that the strongest international interest is from Asia, but I have no statistics to back that up. Financial aid for international students is limited. I just checked the 2015-16 Common Data Set (you can Google it, too, lots of good info – almost all US colleges have them, so you can look at other schools as well). The 25-75% range was 33-35. So 33 is the 25th percentile.

@intparent Here’s some stats to back you up. https://www.hmc.edu/institutional-research/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2014/01/2015-Facts-Facts-Template_Sent.pdf

For this year’s freshman class, the top countries represented were China (10 students), India (3 students), Switzerland (2 students) and Saudi Arabia (2 students).

@heyitsricha

hi i was wondering if you got accepted by ed 2 to Harvey Mudd??
