it will not be considered at HMC

what is your rank, what kind of school do you go to, and what is your gpa?

I go to a large, public high school. That offers around 20 APs and the IB program

GPA. 3.9/4.6
Rank 5/540

Thanks

If you're a guy it is about a 45% shot. If you're a girl your chances are better than that.

really, i would have thought girls would have a harder time getting into the few spots. maybe i have a chance.

The "few" spots!?! If we could we'd fill 50% of the spots with qualified girls. My class of '10 has an exceptionally low ratio. My guess is they'll try to give girls even a larger boost this year in order to balance Mudd out more.

atomicfusion, to what extent do you think being an URM will help in getting into mudd?

Well, being an URM definitely helps. We don't have many African Americans (in my class of ~180 people we have one half black guy, and then a guy from Ghana, and a girl from Jamaica, so depending on how you look at it, we have 1-3 "black" '10ers). If you're an African American your chances will be significantly higher. I know that we have some Hispanic students, so it wouldn't be as much of a boost if you're Hispanic, but it will still help. And I'm not really sure about how many Native Americans we have to be honest.

"If we could we'd fill 50% of the spots with qualified girls."

He's not lying. What was it, 22% female? 27%?

In the sterile envornment of CC, numbers are the quickest method to respond to such a question. And, numbers do make jobs in admissions much easier. And, any standardized number which is deemed fair in interpretting and measuring a student's performance is also considered.

ACT is respected for being fair in interpretting or measuring HS students. Although the others are correct to point out that ACT is not the test that MUDD requires, scores such as your own deliver a very positive statement about your academic capabilities. You basically did better.

Your 2050 in the SAT is a great 95th percentile.
Your 34 in the ACT is 99th percentile.

In the Collegeboard's web page, they compare the 34 ACT to a 1510-1550 (old 2-test score) Go to:
<a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/highered/ra/sat/satACT_concordance.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/highered/ra/sat/satACT_concordance.pdf</a></p>

You have nothing to lose with it. And, it tells me that you may opt to take the SAT again as you have room for improvement -- hopefully you can get the SAT score attributable to your ACT score.

Good luck.

My class has 40 females and I think 140 males. So yeah that's 22% female.

And yes it's a shame that the OP has a 34 ACT, which is better than the OP's SAT score. I'm not sure if HMC accepts January SATs? In the case that we do, you might want to retake your SAT if you want the $10k/yr HMC scholarship. I think all you would need to do is raise your critical reading to 700+.

If I remember correctly from some recent Mudd literature, the freshman class is about 25% girls. They also mentioned that they are looking to even it out with this year's incoming class. So, yes, girls probably will have a better chance to get into Mudd this year.

And, also, if I remember correctly, Mudd won't even look at your ACT score.

As for your chances (I'm saying this as a recent ED accepted student, so take that as you will), I'd agree with the 45% already stated. Most of your ability to get in would hinge on you improving your SATs a bit (the average for math is about 770, for cr about 720, and the average w about 700-ish) and having awesome essays and recommendations. As far as the SATs go though, I wouldn't stress too much if you don't totally meet your goal. my math SAT was 730 and I sill got in. Essays and teacher recs are likely much more important.

Efflorescence, if a $40,000 scholarship is on the line, then the SAT retake matters a lot more than just "meeting a goal". If the OP wasn't just short of getting that scholarship, I wouldn't be trying to convince a retake.

Harvey Mudd's Numbers as advertised for class of ????

45% are Californians
12% are underrepresented minority students (we'd like more)
32% are women (we'd like more)
90% ranked in the top 10% of their high school class
over 80% receive financial aid

SAT Scores -- Middle 50%
SAT Critical Reading 680-760
SAT Math 740-790
SAT Writing 670-740
SAT Math II Subject Exam 760-800

<a href="http://www.hmc.edu/admin/admission/numbers.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.hmc.edu/admin/admission/numbers.html</a></p>

The 2006 HMC Annual Report confirms what I previously suspected. The goal of the admission's office for the class of 2011 is to get as many girls as possible. So expect a slight boost in chances for females and a slight decrease in chances for males.

Atomicfusion: Is that annual report on line somewhere?
