I’m a junior in a Texas public school. I’m wondering how hard it is to get into McCombs…
I’m thinking of majoring in accounting (that’s a part of McCombs right?)
rank: 32/935 (3.42%)
weighted gpa: 4.72 unweighted gpa: 3.78
SAT: 2090 (im planning on retaking in June to raise my reading score esp.)
math: 720
reading:600
writing: 770
Band for 2 years
leadership roles in Key Club and HOSA; student leader in my church (does that even count?)
volunteering since freshman
do you think i have some chance of getting accepted? i’ve always thought i was eligible for automatic admission but i learned today that it depends on which major you choose… is there an automatic admission for the McCombs?
Also, are there any requirements such as need SAT II Subject tests that I need to take? I looked the ut website and it said that they don’t require students to take SAT II but i also heard someone saying that you need to take specific SAT II for whichever major you choose.
I’m completely clueless so please tell me anything that i need to know!!
@heylee1028 there is no auto admission to McCombs. If you are top 7% (maybe 8% next year) you are automatically guaranteed admission to UT but not a specific major. You have good stats however I would definitely try and bring up your critical reading + math score to above 1400. I would also take the ACT and try and get at least a 33. You can check you tube videos to help you do well on each section. Critical reading and science are all about timing. This summer I would definitely work or do an internship and try to lead a project at work or the internship to help better the business you are working for. You can write about this experience in your application essay. Your church leadership should count. It’s all about the impact you’ve made in your school or environment. Look for ways you can get involved and have leadership positions. If you can run a project that raises money for your community or a group in need even better!
As for SAT II tests, my daugher did not take/submit any so it’s definitely not required. Nd he also did not submit any of her AP scores for admission consideration.
My D got into McCombs this year!
Good luck!
McCombs lists the following info about its class profile: average SAT 1361; average rank 7percent, average ACT 33

I’d suggest trying the SAT again as suggested above. You want to be higher than average ideally. Try the ACT. Your rank is excellent so don’t let your foot off the gas between now and June. Applications open August 1. Get yours in earlier rather than later.
Have a Plan B- apply to other universities in case you don’t get into McCombs. All the public accounting firms recruit at A&M as well. If you can’t imagine anywhere but UT and get in to undergraduate studies, you’ll need close to straight As your freshman year to get in as a sophomore.
Definitely do the ACT! UT’s holistic review formula is better for the ACT than SAT for some.
Average ACT for McCombs is a 31, not 33
You are right! Wish we could edit our posts. Thanks for catching that.
Got in to McCombs also!
GPA: 5.048 and 3.853
Class Rank: 47/641 Top 7.33%
SAT: 1870
6 AP tests
Clubs: StuCo, LEO, DECA, NHS, NSHS, Academy Ambassadors, Class Council, Astronomy club, etc.
I have held 6 Officers positions 3 in DECA, 2 in LEO, and 1 in Class Council
I also have a paid internship at a recruiting firm.
I have tons of awards including District Winner 4 times at DECA and 2 State finalist/International participant (also DECA).
I’ve also taken 10 different business classes at my school with A’s in them all. I plan on having killer letters of rec. One from an UT alum and another from a former Dean at some small private college.
I also had a very good resume and essays. I also live in Texas. Good luck to the rest of you!
