How hard is it to get into Middesex as a sophomore?

I’m in ninth grade applying for tenth grade and a lot of people are saying it’s basically impossible to get into Middlesex School as a sophomore this year. Does anybody know anything about this? thx

Yes, it is harder to get in as a sophomore.

Middlesex takes approximately 15 boys/15 girls as sophomores. It is a much smaller number than many other schools, but because the entire student body is only 350, it is all pretty relative to that. My DD is also applying as a sophomore.

This thread may be useful for you. Based on the numbers, Middlesex is pretty hard to get into in 10th and you may have better chances at Andover or St. Paul’s, that is saying something.

Can’t speak for Middlesex, but we had an interesting experience with two HADES schools when we asked if we should reclassify our current 9th-grade student as a 9th-grade applicant rather than a 10th-grade applicant, which was our default. One school strongly recommended that we do so because they said he would do better with a 4-year cohort and he would be better prepared, given the limited curriculum available in his current school. The other school said that it is easier to get into 10th. There is less competition because many of the top candidates have entered some boarding school in 9th. We went with each school’s recommendation so we have a mixed bag of applications.

@wayoutwest18 That is indeed interesting. You took a very sound approach.

I think when you look at the % of acceptances, it is apples to apples. I do know that for boys, 10th grade may be more competitive as many applicants come from JBS, which typically go through ninth. I was told by all 6 schools not to repeat 9th, but that was due to our particular situation (DD is old for her grade and very mature)

I believe the correct number of students in total at Middlesex is 375.Usually they take 75 ninth graders and then build that class up to a 100 by tenth grade so I think plan on close to 25 tenth grade additions or maybe a few spots would be left for junior year. It’s a tough school to get admission, I think they received over 1100 applications for like roughly 100 spots.
