how hard is it to get into Yale as art major undergraduate?

Also, do they look at portfolio more than grades?

I am planning to major in fine art. Thanks in advance.

seoul, for undergraduate you just have to get in. You don't need to declare a major in art or anything else. Grades, scores and class rank are very important. So are extracurriculars, essays, recommendations and sheer luck.

Hooks help and talent in art is definitely a hook, so do submit a portfolio, but I would say in answer to your question, grades will be more important than your portfolio.

Yale is one of the most (this year maybe the most) selective college in America.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

I agree with momrath. grades are far more important than your portfolio. i applied yale for early and i was rejected. ha. i believe my art portfolio is very strong but my grades weren't that good...so u'd better work hard on ur SATs and GPA!
Does anyone know which schools, except art schools, care more about the art portfolio and talents rather than grades??

If your portfolio is really good, it might be a little bit of a hook, otherwise, you are just like anyone else applying to Yale. You have to have the whole package, and even then it's anybody's game. Once you are in, I don 't know how hard it is to get into the art major.

alicehans, I'm sorry about the Yale rejection. Did you submit your portfolio as part of your application? I wonder if the art departement is involved at all in reviewing those. There's a thread or two not too far back on LA schools with good art departments. If you list the schools, you can check them on the Princeton Review site to see what they expect for SATs and GPA, and how important the portfolio is in the admissions process.

maybe Bard, Bennington, Alicehans..

yale looks at transcript and sat a LOT

you cant apply as an undergraduate major in the arts (unfortunately)

I submitted a portfolio, and I've won numerous state and national competitions (and was a semifinalist to an international competition) and yet I was still rejected because my SATs were below the threshold (not by much - 2170) and my GPA is a 90.1/100 (UW)

yale is one of the toughest and trickiest ivys.
if you're looking for good art colleges why don't you try going to
cornell [they have a good art department for underg]
i don't know about yale though.

you can always go to good art colleges and schools
if you want to major in fine art
try thinking about cooper union, cornell, scad and other colleges that fit your interest. :) good luck

look into cornell, cooper union. FIT in nyc may be another option, and probably the easier one of the three to get into.

skidmore is hella good for the arts!

So, for anyone who looks at this, just go to RISD. You can do this cross-registration with Brown, so it’s pretty much the perfect choice for art majors.
