I'm thinking that I might have to work my way into an engineering major my freshman year rather than be accepted into Cockrell from the get. I know it's a gamble getting in and I could potentially be putting all my eggs in one basket, so I want to know how hard the work will be to do this and what kind of grades will I need freshman year to be able to switch?

I don’t think it is possible for a freshman to do so unless you have completed Calc 1+2 prior to enterring UT Austin. I may be incorrect but here is a reference for you.
[Change of Major/Internal Transfer - Cockrell School of Engineering](<a href=“Undergraduate Education”>Undergraduate Education)

The requirement that you have 24 hours of classes at UT makes it likely that no one transfers until their second year at UT. Most of the courses a freshman engineering student takes are not engineering per se, but the Calc and Chemistry which are tough indeed.

I would not recommend doing that, if at all possible I would try to get in initially. I have some some friends trying to transfer in and they say it is extremely competitive, and you have to have at least a 3.6 to be seriously considered, and most have >3.8.

Also, engineers do take major specific classes their first year, so you will be a little behind, and I think you need 24 credit hours to transfer.
