Hi everyone. I just have a quick question... I really don't know what major I want to do between engineering or economics or something totally different. Right now I'm planning on applying to engineering honors, but what if i change my mind? how hard is it to transfer into the business school, and can you transfer honors programs? I'm applying for 40 acres too if that makes any difference. thank you.

the best answers can be found from the UT website. Google “internal transfers UT Austin” and you will find all the info you need.

Ok thank you! No wonder I couldn’t find anything, i saw searching “changing majors” and “switching schools” instead of “internal transfer.” That clears it up then.

No problem, I figured you would want info straight from the source.

The difficulty will depend on the school you’re trying to transfer into. Some (like business) are quite competitive.

Some of the colleges like business and engineering are hard to transfer into. I got admitted into electrical and computer engineering and decided to switch my major after a year because I didn’t like it. If I had wanted to apply for an internal transfer for another engineering, I wouldn’t have gotten it. I met the minimum GPA requirements but my GPA was well below the lowest GPA of someone that got admitted. On the other hand, some colleges like the College of Natural Science accept everyone as long as you get into UT. I believe business is more competitive than any of the engineering but the engineering varies in competitiveness depending on which engineering.

From the last summer orientation handout.

How to change major at UT.

Business requirements - minimum 3.6 GPA and 24 hours in residence, no more than 90 hours at UT. Fall admission only.

Engineering requirement - GPA requirements differ by department, minimum 3.0 UT GPA, UT Engineering basic sequence GPA taken into account, minimum 24 hours in residence.

Natural Sciences requirement - minimum 2.0 GPA with > 45 hours; no GPA requirement with < 45 hours.
