* am out of state and i dont have an awesome GPA so the UC's i aint getting into as a freshmen. But i wanted to know how hard would it be to transfer from SBCC to UCSB for my sophomore year. What type of grades would i have to get at SBCC for my freshmen year. I dont really want to spend 2 years in a community college, but if its just as hard to transfer in state as it is to get in then idk if i can get in. And i dont want to go to SBCC for 2 years. Id rather work my ass off my freshmen year and have fun my next 3.

In short, it’s really hard.

You’ll need 60 units completed as a bare minimum, as well as a high/competitive GPA and EC’S like clubs, etc. The application period is in the Fall, and by that time you should have your major classes (English, Math, etc) completed, and chance are you won’t. Getting classes that you need is probably one of the biggest challenges. Your registration date probably won’t allow you to take the most impacted classes right away, and those classes are the ones that are needed to transfer. You’re out of state, and just coming to go to school right? I don’t believe your UC application is given the CA resident priority b/c you are not one. But by going to a CC in CA, there are TAG and TAP programs available to you, which can help guarantee you a spot in the UC’S. The UC’s in general are pretty fair to the transfer students. And honestly, B/c you are out of state, the tuition you will be paying at UCSB is going to be much higher. A CC will be much nicer to your wallet, and that extra year there will cut down your costs.

You can do it, and people have done it. It just is not something that you should 100% bank on.

usually when you transfer to a UC you are almost always a junior. UCs want you to finish your GEs at a CC :(

I had a friend who got accepted to UC Berkeley as a Sophomore. This was two years ago, so I am not sure if it is is same policy (especially now with budget cuts and such).

She got in because she had all of her A-G requirements that she had to take during high school. In short, the reason why she had to attend a CC is because she missed the UC Application deadline when we were still in high school. (I know…>__<;;~) She had great GPA, ECs, everything.

I think it will be very difficult regardless. Even if you decide to transfer in one year with the junior standing (which has been done) it will be tough!

You can no longer enter UCB as a Sophomore, it is mandatory to transfer in as a junior.
