Hi,
I am a freshman in high school and this year I am taking 2 Ap's, calc and computer science, and i will probably finish with an a- in CS and a b+ in calc. with this GPA deduction already happening in my freshman year, will my shot at schools like Stanford be hampered? also, how much does it help getting high honors/ very high honors/ salutatorian/ valedictorian in your graduating class? Is GPA really what parents make of it?

Okay, first of all - you need to calm down. You’re a HS FRESHMAN getting a B in AP Calc and an A in another AP class? Trust me, you’re doing just fine. Better than fine actually.

Now take a deep breath and relax - you have plenty of time to worry about college when you’re a senior. For now, just do yourself a favor and enjoy high school. If you keep up the great work you’re doing, have some fun with EC’s that you like and in general be the kind of student teachers want to brag about - for accomplishments in and out of the classroom - you’ll be golden.

Good luck and have fun! :)

I may be wrong, but I don’t think Stanford considers freshman grades. GPA is incredibly important in college admissions. Elite colleges don’t admit students who haven’t been exceptional in high school.

I’m fairly certain Stanford does consider freshman grades, but not positive. Either way, don’t stress too much about it. In my high school career I got a B+ in math once and had an A- in math another time and I got into Stanford. GPA’s important, but just because you don’t have a 4.0 doesn’t mean that you won’t get into top tier schools.

As far as getting honors/valedictorian etc. that will depend on your school. In my school, you must have a 4.0 to be a valedictorian. But that’s not the case for all schools.
