I keep seeing pictures of cadets with a rifle. How heavy is that thing? Do carry that a lot? Can’t be fun…

ya heavy. lol

Carry a LOT in 2nd BCT. I'd say its around 8-10 pounds.

Don't get too many demerits you get to carry it alot more

or not.....

Yeah it's a pretty heavy rifle... very FUN to run with on the overlook.

In the past you used to have to march with it on the Terazzo when you got a Form 10 (for doing something wrong). You would have to do an hour of marching for each demerit. That has been changed now, and you serve confinements (2 hours of study time at your desk in service dress) instead, which is much more productive, though just as annoying. :P

the rifles are used often for runs, and at first don't seem heavy. but after days of training and hitting a mile mark or so, they get really aeavy, especially when you help a classmate who is weaker by carrying his/hers

Well, it's better to have to carry a classmate's rifle than the classmate! (One of my friends had to do that during a run, with one other guy's help.) People get REALLY P.O.ed/tired when they have to carry you...so learn to run! No one was very happy with the non-runner after that particular BCT run!

Does your element stay together on runs during BCT?

yes, your flight (for BCT is all the basic cadets) takes runs together for training sessions. When you actually run the AFT (1.5 miles) its on your own pace, as is most running in the morning (every other day is running, the other is PFT prep stuff)

"most running in the morning (every other day is running, the other is PFT prep stuff)"

Does this refer to BCT or the ac year?

the running every other morning is BCT only. the running as a group in the afternoons though (BCT and ac year) are often with rifles
