So I got wait listed in honors program, and I got a offer of direct admission from material science and engineering department.

I am probably gonna take the direct admission offer and I want to take up another engineering or perhaps science major along the way, even if that might mean 5th year.

So not I have to send this e-mail saying that yes, I would like to be on the wait list, but I want to know how helpful the honors (if I get in) will be to a engineering major.

I've heard people saying that even though the classes the honors program offer is great, they are not much use to an engineering major student, or even hindrance to a rigorous double major students.

So how helpful is the honors program to an engineering major student?

Additional questions

How often do a wait listed student accepted to the program?

What is a departmental honors?

Majoring two engineering degrees.... good idea?

Honors is considered by many students to be an extra hinderance with UW (many feel burnt out by junior year). Plus, the honors program is more of a liberal arts focus such as humanities courses. I’d suggest departmental honors so the student can specify their studies.

The honors program has a strong emphasis on humanities, but does require science components in the heart of the curriculum.
I double majored as an honors student and the program definitely shaped my world view, ethos and general knowledge for the better. If you want to grow as a person and are willing to put in the effort, it’s the place for you. If you just want to get in and out of undergrad asap with the minimal humanities, I’d avoid it for your sake and theirs.

Was it not difficult to fit in a schedule for two majors and honors?

I am planning on taking two engineering or one engineering+ science, so it looks like if I don’t be careful, I’ll have to go into the 5th year.

So is the extra work and two majors a viable course for four years?

^seems like it. My friend is a quadruple major in Honors, going to graduate after 5 years(?) (currently in his 4th). Physics, Math, Computer Science, and… Linguistics.

Phys/Math/CS have overlapping requirements, although mostly introductory ones. He takes anywhere between 18 and 20 credits a quarter, and puts a lot of effort into all of his classes. These areas are what he’s passionate about, so for him, it’s not ‘extra work’ to do the Honors humanities and pursue four majors at the same time.

I completed two disparate degrees (microbiology BS/English BA) and an unrelated minor (Diversity studies) in 4 years, including 3 summer quarters, so 5 years if summers are not considered. I graduated with college and departmental honors and also took many electives outside of both my majors and the honors program, including three years in the wind ensemble. Cutting out the unneccessary electives and having a more closely related (read: overlapping requirements) double major, I could have had a normal schedule and graduated in 4 years without trouble.

Do a lot of Foster freshman direct students join the honors program? If you get direct admission as a freshman would it be beneficial for you to also do honors?
