How I Raised my SAT Score by 800+ Points

Hello guys,

Just wanted to give some advice for anyone taking the SAT. I am the first child in my family, so I basically walked into the PSAT blind. I was shocked when I got my results back (I believe it was around a 120-130). That was freshman or sophomore year. My junior year, I took it again (I took a Princeton Review class over the summer) and scored a measly 160ish. I was stumped. I had NO idea what I was doing wrong and how to fix it. The summer of my senior year I went HARDCORE. The whole summer was spent at Elite (a very vigorous SAT program in the Bay Area) and studying old SAT tests. They key is to KEEP PRACTICING! Also, look at why you got questions RIGHT. I had 0 breaks; I basically studied for 18 hours a day. I would do problems and if I got them wrong, I would do them on a whiteboard that I had at home. Then, I would go back and do those problems again. I took the SAT my senior year in October (last chance). When I got my results back, I was happy to see that I had scored a 2000 on the SAT (710 in math!! -3 questions only). I was happy because math was something I had REALLY struggled with it. Remember, it’s NEVER about how good the test prep company you are using. ITS ALL ABOUT HOW YOU ARE STUDYING. Simply doing the hw and showing up to the classes WILL NOT help. Ask questions. Watch videos. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, direct your attention to Collegeboard practice tests/problems as these will show up on the real SAT!!! My SAT and GPA got me into schools such as UC Davis, UC San DIego, etc. Hope this helps all of you that are stumped and feel free to ask me questions!! STAY MOTIVATED!!

My story is so similar. My sophomore SAT score was a 124. My junior PSAT score was 1010 (redesigned). I took them both without studying. I was so disappointed with my PSAT that I enrolled in a TPR course and studied the rest by myself. I ended up with a 1390 December of my senior year (1400 if you superscore), which is about a 1970. Anyway, I don’t mean to hijack the thread, so I’ll end it there, but I just wanted to say that is so remarkable to see others like me; thanks for sharing.
