I was wondering how important it is to medical schools that a student have leadership roles in clubs on campus. How valuable is it? Is it worth the time/effort? Does the club/organization need to relate to medicine? Please answer. Thanks.

I'm wondering about this too cause I'm very active member in this one club, but I wonder if it's necessary to become officer to be considered worthwhile by adcom

They care about leadership possitions and they wont penalize you for having interests and being human.

I was extremely involved and had many leadership positions and I believe that it was probably the strongest part of my application. None of my organizations though were medically related. I quit the pre-med club at my school freshman year b/c I felt it was pretty worthless.

I think that if you can get a leadership position in an org you should try to. If you are worried about time commitment, then pick a position like secretary or soemthing else with fewer responsibilities.

I think that on a personal level, all effort directed at becoming and being a leader is worthwhile. You learn about yourself and your capabilities, learn skills and ways of dealing with people that will be valuable no matter what field you enter.

I'm 100% sure it's not mandatory and quite sure it would be very good.
