How important are essays to JHU?

I've been reading some of the posts here and people mention that essays are an important factor to JHU. After reading some fantastic essays on this board, I feel a little worried that I didn't mention anything about my major in my essays.

My common app. essay was about an influential teacher who helped me overcome my academic weakness in English composition. The $10 essay was about spending the day planting my 12 year-old pine tree (I've had it since kindergarden). And my most interesting course (probably the best of the three) was about my newfound understanding and appriciation for the French language, although it was quite long compared to others (about 620).

I want to major in Electrical Engineering but I never mentioned anything about math or science in my essays. Do you think that was a mistake? I was hoping the admission officers would look at the rest of my application for why I want to do engineering.

Definitely NOT a mistake! The essays are supposed to show who you are, not necessarily what your academic plans are. My favorite class had absolutely no relation to my major, nor did my 10 dollar essay. They're looking for people who are going to add something to the community, and not just the academic part!

I'm looking to do premed and I wrote about how Shakespeare's "Macbeth" and T.S. Eliot's poems were my favourite classes.

I didnt mention anything about my major. however after I turned in my application a long long time ago, I read that something related to the major can help. It's not saying the essay is supposed to be "why i wanna do engineering" or that kinda. but I heard, it's good to be somehow related. like.. problem solving skills or .. etc..

well a dice is rolled, and there is nothing much i can do about it. so I am just chilling.

i think essays count A LOT..... since i got in ED with nothing special going on in my life i can say that essays count A LOT.... take advantage of the box that you can check if you're using a medium other than essay on paper. that's what i did ;)

123qwe... what did you send?

umm.. basically what i did was a "photo essay"... i work in the planetarium in this museum in manhattan and i just took pictures of myself showing the most interesting things that i find in the museum. I also gave like a mini tour of nyc (basically manhattan) to the admissions officer and stuff... i showed them how i was using the $10 in the city.... hmm.. yeah and that's it.. i just edited some stuff on photoshop and made it a powerpoint presentation... and sent the cd over...
there was more than that but that's the basic idea.
i think the contents were more important though.. it reflected my interest in physics (intended major.. astrophysics to be more exact) and how much i love my nyc... it showed who i am...that's the important thing :D
i was also thinking about writing an essay on the $10 bill... that would be an expensive essay...

hayden planetarium at rose center, amnh? just out of curiosity. :)

yes! i see you're from nyc.. did you every work t here too?

hahaa unfortunately, no: figured there's only one planetarium in manhattan.
i live on s.i. (forgotten borough :(), so it's not exactly close, either, although i've visited twice. it seems like it'd be a cool place to work for! what's it likee?

my essays were horrible >_>

i'm hoping to do a health science/human anatomy/neuroscience...you know...sorta premed and things....and i wrote an essay on how a banana travels through my body...for that $10 essay...cuz i love bananas....i explain the process it goes through from entering the mouth to out the (you know where)....i thought it was creative...but do u think they'll like it?

how is that an adventure? and what did you spend the $10 on? I dont mean to sound critical, but its the kind of thing that you have to read to understand.

umm...hello? a comb of bananas at walmart here is just a bit under $10...and it's an adventure for the banana through my body....the prompt said plan a day adventure....it didn't specify that it has to be for youself...plus i love bananas..did i mention that?

Hmm... just hope they don't read it immediately after lunch. Anyways, it takes more than 24 hours for something to pass through your system...
Definitely different, maybe that's what they're looking for?

lol...i also hope that they don't read it after any meal....that would sorta sucks...but i thought it was creative...probably one of the most creative paper i've ever wrote(written(?), i can't ever get these right!!!!!good thing i didn't have to deal with this on the essay). man, my super strict AP english teacher read this and burst into laughter (not becuz it sucked i hope) but she said she really like it....never seen anything like my paper b4....hopefully it works....oh,well....guess i'll find out in, what? 3 months?
