How important are freshman-junior year marks?

Hi I'm an American Citizen living in Canada looking to come back home for university. Apparently American Universities look at ALL you marks from your freshman year. Canadian Universities only look at your senior year marks and I though American schools did the same so I slacked of early on. My GPA from my freshamn to junior year is only around a 3.3 but my senior year GPA will be around 3.5-3.7. Will my freshman to junior year marks hurt me??

Btw. i'm planning to apply to the journalism programs at

Northwestern University
University of Miami
American University in Washington D.C.
George Washington University

Yep. Definitely at Northwestern, but not so sure about the others. Not all universities look at all from freshman year. For example, University of Michigan and the UCs (I think, at least) drop freshman year grades. They view it as a transition year.

Some schools do drop freshman year, but at pretty much any school in the US Junior year is considered the most significant...they certainly don't only look at senior year grades. For EA/ED, senior year grades aren't even out when they make their decisions (though obviously acceptance is contingent upon not having a huge drop.)

Serious?? They don't look at your senior marks?? and Junior marks are the most important??? I thought they would place heavy empahsis on your midterm marks during your senior year because those courses are the most university like??

Nope, most of the time your applications will be out before your sr. year grades ever come in. They will be able to see which classes you have been taking, though, and most schools will require that you report to them if your get a D in a class or drop below a certain gpa.
