How important are SAT Subject Tests for Stanford?

I was told that 98% of the people that are accepted have taken Subject Tests at least once before applying...
Is it extremely important that I take them and that I do well (750+) on them?

They are important, but I don’t think they typically make or break an applicant. I would advise focusing on the essays.

What happens if I don’t take them?

If you don’t take them, you might be reducing your chances compared to a candidate who has your credentials but has taken them. I think if you want to maximize your chances, it would be a good idea to take the SAT subject tests and score well. It’s tough to get in as you know, you don’t want to start the race with a handicap.

My D is just finishing her sophomore year at Stanford. She did not take nor submit any subject tests to Stanford and was accepted. So it is not a requirement but if you have time to take a couple and do well on them, it would probably be beneficial to your application. Good luck!

My son is graduating this quarter. I believe doing well on SAT subject tests was instrumental in his being accepted. Best wishes.

Hmm. Would it be better to put off applying SCREA in that case in favor of RD to take the SubjectnTests?

The FAQ on the Stanford admissions websites states:

^So, unlike the SATI and ACT, one can do score choice on Subject Tests?

Hoggirl - yes you can use score choice for the subject tests

^Thanks CBA.
