How important are the essays in the UMich app?

My D just applied last week to LSA as an out of state student with 4.0 U.W. in a rigorous curriculum. She has very strong SAT's, E.C's and LORs.

For the essays she started with 600 word essays she had already written on related topics, modified them a little bit to suit the specific prompts better, and then brutally cut them down to be closer to the 250 word limit (final word count was around 300-330). In all that editing, the final products are not very smooth-flowing and are somewhat tangential in responding to the actual prompts.

I'd just like to know how important the essays will be in the evaluation of her application. She is interested in the honors college.

You may want to take a look at the U of M page on Princeton Review and [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: Application Review](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/prospective/prospectivefreshmen/eval_categories.php).

It’s not important for getting into U of M, but I would think it would be pretty important for getting into the Honors College.
