What are the benefits of taking a subject test? I know they aren’t required by most schools (unless you’re looking at ivies and other competitive ones). But do colleges actually look for subject tests when they review applicants?
In my opinion, the subject tests are pretty easy. I would say anything 730+ is a good score (because usually, like you said, they’re used for more competitive universities).
If you’re just looking at an average school, I don’t think the SAT II matters that much. Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it unless your school requires it or if you are trying to showcase your talents in a certain subject. Or, if your GPA tanked because of a C in precalculus, taking the Math 2 subject test and scoring well may be able to offset that.
I have asked admissions officers from schools that do not require them, and they do not seem to have any preference.
Also, universities may not require the subject tests for admission, but they do want them for admission to certain schools (ie, UMich doesn’t require subject tests, but if you want to go to their engineering school, you need them.)
Anyways, it seems that if a college wants subject tests, they want 2, and I have heard that Math 2 is one of the best ones you can take.
