SAT subject tests - how important?

I know this question has probably been asked a million times before, but how much can SAT II tests help or hurt your application? And which ones and why should you take them?

Many colleges require you to take 2 SATII tests, so you do not even have the choice of not taking them.
They can obviously enhance your application if you get a good score. they are important because they are the only standardized way of comparing students from different schools. With score choice (if accepted by your college) you can decide on whether to send them or not.
The subject must obviously be one that you are strong at because there is no point in taking a test you are not comfortable with. For most engineering schools you need to take MathI/II and either physics or chemistry. for other schools I guess it depends on what you want to do and the picture of yourself you want to project
