How important is 8th grade?

Do colleges look at your 8th grade report card? I’m taking Algebra 1 and Living Environment which many people take in high school so it may show up on my transcript. I did very well in both of those classes but I failed a quarter in Social Studies and I’m worried this will adversely affect my high school GPA and/or college chances.

Colleges don’t look at middle school grades unless your district puts 8th grade scores on the high school transcript. You may want to ask the high school guidance counselor about this. Some high schools apparently do use 8th grade scores in GPA calculations, but colleges usually won’t use your 8th grade scores in calculating your GPA.
See this previous thread: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1782877-do-8th-grade-transcript-classes-affect-high-school-gpa.html

My daughter’s high school (which was actually a combined middle/high school) had all 8th graders take Algebra I and Living Environment in 8th grade. Those two classes, and only those two, were included on the high school transcript.

I would ask the question of the HS guidance office.

Even if the grades are on your HS transcript and/or are calculated in your GPA, colleges will place little (if any) weight on 8th grade grades. Who you are as a 13 year old will generally be vastly different from you as a 17 year old, and every AO knows that.

BUT…why did you fail a quarter? Got sick? family issues? Didn’t study?
Figure that out, take care of the issue, so you are ready for HS.

Grades in 8th grades are very different mportant, as are grades in second quarter, fourth and sixth grades, learning is cumulative. The goal is both building and combining skills and knowledge acquired in earlier grades with what is learned in the current grade. Grades themselves as markers of what is learned at each point rather than important only in a transcript.
