How important is disciplinary history?

I'm new to this and I've been wondering how disciplinary history (supension/expulsion) weighs into the admissions process. Mine's a suspension. Would this automatically knock my app down several notches or can I show what I've learned from it/how it's changed me? I'm looking at top colleges, maybe Princeton and Georgetown.

They want to know serious infractions. Criminal activity, prosecutions, expulsions. They need to protect their student body. If you’re not a threat to commit stuff, don’t sweat it.
