How important is it to take Subject SAT's?

My son is in 10th grade, a straight A student and planning to take his first SAT at the end of this school year and is already doing practice tests as recommended on this site.

His goal is be a doctor...has lots of determination.

He mentioned to me last night that he wanted to take the biology SAT subject test. I have no problem at all with him pursuing the test but does it help him when applying to schools? What benefit are the subject tests...or are they required at some of the better schools?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

Well,if he does not take a subject test,he cannot apply to college that requires one.It is simple. He must take at least two subject tests .After that,it is up to him if he wants to take 3 or 8 ..

Many "top" schools require two, some, like Harvard and Princeton, require three, unless you take the ACT and submit it in place of the SAT and subject tests. So yes he should go ahead and take the bio test based on the places he's looking at.
