How important is ranking/location?
I have been accepted to Ohio State and Temple University as a transfer. Currently wait listed at the University of Minnesota. My intended major is Risk Management and Insurance. I was accepted directly into the business schools for both OSU and Temple. I wanted to know how important rank/location/reputation of school is. For now, I want to commit to OSU. From what I have gathered

Perks of OSU:
-Fisher Connect (I believe that’s what it is called), They help to fully prepare you for interviews and go as far as to even set up an interview for you on campus
- Columbus seems like a great city for job opportunities. However, I’m not sure how the field in Columbus is for Risk Management and Insurance.
- School Spirit. Although I am committed to my studies, I do like to have fun and attend football/basketball games. OSU Buckeyes have enormous school spirit

Perks of Temple:
- Ranked 6th in the nation for Risk Management and Insurance according to U.S. News. Not sure why it is ranked so high. (If anyone could inform me of why it is. I’m thinking it has to to with recruitment or strength of the overall program)
- Philadelphia, Another city which seems to have great job opportunities.

I ultimately see myself working in the city which was another big reason why I chose some of the schools that I applied to. I am from NJ, so I will be OOS and cost will ultimately be the same between OSU and Temple. (If I get off the wait list for Minnesota and choose to go it will be a little cheaper)

I would just like some insight on whether OSU or Temple is the better choice. Another thing that strays me away is the crime rate in Philadelphia. Temple is located in North Philly where it is the most dangerous. However, I do know they have great campus police and I know that no matter where I go I just need to make good judgement. Any input would be great!

The entire business college at Ohio State is very strong, and you are right in listing Fisher Connect as a very good reason to attend OSU. A large number of companies directly recruit here, via job fairs, information sessions, hosting special events, etc. Most of the time, companies interested in hiring for a few positions will send representatives to do first round interviews on campus, which makes the logistics of interviewing that much simpler.

In terms of jobs in Columbus, or in Ohio in general, Nationwide is based in Columbus and recruits at OSU, as do a number of regional or national banks (5/3, PNC, Chase, etc.). Are there other fields you are interested in?

Thank you for your input. Unfortunately I am only interested in Risk Management and Insurance. I plan to earn the degree and study to earn an FRM or PRM. But I do want to do so while working. I’m not sure how the job market is for my field of study in Ohio. Does Fisher Connect help to find jobs outside of Ohio too? I am looking to work in a major city. Columbus, Minneapolis, NYC, etc. Any other input would be great!

It would be fairly easy to get a job in a major city after you graduate, assuming you are a desirable candidate and aren’t too specific about which city. Since national corporations recruit here, there are positions all over the country you could pursue.

This may give you more information about your intended specialization and the companies you may work for with your degree path:

[Fisher College of Business | Specialization: Risk Management](http://www.cob.ohio-state.edu/undergraduate/academics/specializations/risk-management/)

Just to let you know, in case this matters to you, Risk Management is a fairly small major compared to most of the other specializations Fisher offers. I actually have only met a few people in this major in my three years here. If you are interested in a larger program, which would mean more choice in professors and more internship options, you may want to look at majoring in Finance, with the risk management track:

http://fisher.osu.edu/supplements/10/11930/FINANCE%20Semester%20Advising%20Sheet-%20Risk%20MGT%20Sub-Plan.pdf

I actually did not know I could major in Finance with a specialization in Risk Management. It also looks like they will have a new specialization starting this summer for Insurance. I will definitely have to think things over again and possibly speaking with an advisor when I attend orientation will help. Thank you again though for your help I really appreciate it!
