I’m thinking of entering ibank and working in finance, but I don’t necessarily want to major in econ. Would this make it more difficult to get an internship at places like goldman sachs? I know people in other majors have, but with a solid GPA is there a huge difference?
Your major (at least at an institution of Duke’s stature) is not especially critical. This topic has been frequently discussed in CC’s Duke forum; you might be wise to read the applicable comments. To synopsize, however, the best iBanking firms seek very bright, well-educated, and exceptionally hard working, and driven individuals, with strong quantitative skills. While Duke undergraduate Economics provides this background, so too does (to cite a single example) Pratt, which has an enviable record of top iBanking placements. I respectfully suggest the firms will teach an entry-level professional what is necessary – and, obviously, one will be expected to be a very “quick study” – however, the specific scholastic background that leads to adroitness and shrewdness is not a hiring constraint.
