ive heard a lot about how this school puts more a focus on students who are passionate about hospitality, leadership, and have work experience.. ive always enjoyed working with people, and am also a captain of 3 varsity sports (football, indoor outdoor track). i havent had too many jobs because of my sport commitment, but ive been working as a waiter since summer 2008, and also as a "secretary" (off the books lol) for my dads real estate business ever since freshman year. volunteer wise, ive done a lot of church work (altar server since 4th grade, youth group advisor, went on a missions trip to Bolivia). so how is hotel administration looking for me? hospitality is definitely a career field im interested in. my GPA's a 91, 2250 SAT, 700 math 2 and 660 Bio

If you can emphesize the fact that b/c of your sports commitment, you can't work during the school year, and then highlight the fact that you were a waiter for the summer, the chances are there. Your SAT scores are great. Definitely apply, but the hotel school is the best in the world, so don't be surprised if you don't get in. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if you did.

thanks dtop, any other thoughts?

also, if i dont get into this school, what are some college majors that would give me an advantage in a career in hotel management? i was thinking of double majoring in economics and international business.. but im still not sure

You definitely sound like a strong candidate from my point of view. I didn't work much during my school years for the same reason, too busy for it. My summer jobs were in teh industry however much like yours. Do a really good job on your essay, combine your leadership skills and what you have learned as a waiter. Our GPA was about the same but my SAT scores weer a bit lower and i got in. Also, do some research before your interview. Read up on some hospitality related news so you have something to talk about. I would recommend applying to other hotel schools as well, we get some transfers from Denver, Deleware, and UNLV. If you apply to programs like these, it will also show your true interest in the field. Good luck!

I am in the same situation as you. I go to a demanding school, so I did not have a lot of time for a job. So, I did not have any direct work experience.
However, I have been in touch with Cornell Admissions officers through the summer program and other contacts.
They really want to see your personality and dedication. Show that you love Cornell. Show that you are a team worker. Show that you love business. And again, Show that you love doing service to people.
I didn't wait tables, didn't work at a health club, wasn't a maid for a hotel.. but I have done a ton of social action and community service type things. At my interview they praised that. It was something different. Everyone says they want to run a hotel, so it's good to have something different. You can use your sports background to develop on a career and say you want to work in the sports industry. Use what you have as a push, not a set back. That is my advice.

And of course show that you are a hard worker.

That's my word of advice.

nycexsteve- at least you worked a summer; it shows that you've been exposed to the industry. Some people have no idea how working for someone really is. One of the adcom officers I talked to says the reason work experience is almost always necessary is because it teaches you that you have to sometimes do crap work, and do it with a smile. The reasoning behind this is so that when you become a high end manager or executive, you have sympathy for your workers and understand how it is to be at the bottom of the chain (and how much those people have an influence on your operation)

I haven't heard of anyone who's gotten in early decision with absolutely no work experience. However, I have heard of people who've gotten deferred, then in (or waitlisted, then in) if they zero work experience.

strong candidate! you sound kind of like me except i was only a 2 season varsity captain. BUT you have better scores and good work experience (i only worked the summer at the front desk of a hotel).

I say you are a strong candidate. focus on your essays etc and the part that you can take to show them your personal feelings about the industry- thats where you will shine.

i always felt SO busy last year from sports and prefect commitments while my room mates this year really didnt do anything in high school so i also feel that you should try to articulate how busy you are through a teacher rec, essay or interview. you do a lot- they want that. you also maintain strong grades etc, that is impressive. show them!

best of luck :)

Thanks dande, so how do you like the program so far?

also, does cornell call the place you worked at for reference.. ? lol because it was a summer job but i didnt exactly tell them that and i havent called my boss back ever since september, pretty stupid i know but now im worried that if they call for a reference hes gona say something negative
