Current Midd Student Here: I recieve ~$40,000 a year need based aide with a mother who nets 60k and a father who nets just a bit below that. I think the aide is fantastic.

Unlike some of its “competitors,” Midd was not generous to my son, and didn’t come close to meeting our EFC. Last year, he received offers of about $20K in financial aid from Brown, Carleton, and Grinnell, and ZERO from Midd. As someone pointed out, each school has its own way to calculate “demonstrated need.” Midd’s way didn’t work for us, at least.

Glad to hear that some people did better. Midd is a terrific school.

I’m confused as to how you are on such a nice aid package, LConflicted, considering the aid package I got. I got $9k/year with $3k in loans and my mother makes ~$40k/year and my father (the noncustodial parent) makes probably between $60k and $80k a year, though I don’t even know because he doesn’t contribute anything to my family.

I’m happy that you got the aid package, just confused as to why mine was so much worse. Oh well, I love Midd but I also love Rice, so I’m okay with giving up my spot to someone else. Midd is an excellent school, but someone else was meant to have my spot and I’m very happy for them.

^Property value?

My house is not worth much at all. My father’s house may be, though I’m not sure. If that’s the cause of my low aid package I would totally understand, but not appreciate it. haha My father won’t even contribute anything to my education, so he definitely won’t sell his house. hahaha

Besides, none of my other schools (except Wesleyan) seemed influenced by it. Oh well.

^^^ That’s probably it. Midd calculates the value of real estate assests when determining aid. Not all schools do.

Hi Fallen,

My family has 0 equity in our home. My father’s job is very shakey and sister is in college.

That last part is key–Fin Aid told us that they double (yes, double) your aide package if a sibling is in school.

Yuck, I’m so sorry to hear Midd doesn’t factor in extenuating circumstances like yours–bureaucracy’s equalizing intentions often fall short.

That probably is it, then. That’s quite alright. I love Midd, but I was blessed to have three other great options, so I should be able to get by. Haha thanks for the concern though, guys.
