I got my letter today too:) highly doubt I'll be going to any open houses though, as I really don't think I can learn anything else out about psu.

bsonln, thanks for the link, it looks sweet

hey i was just accepted and i have some questions about the dorms. are they air conditioned? about how big are they? are there any singles? what makes them so much better than the other dorms?

http://www.hfs.psu.edu/undergraduates/
(simmons and atherton are in south halls)

I don't believe there is air-conditioning, but it really isn't hot here during the academic year.

does anyone know approximately what percent of your classes you take are Honors Classes, like, how many does the average schryer take in the first 2 years?

And, if I may tack on an additional question to gameguy56's, how many classes will the average Schreyer scholar have as a freshman that are huge?

yes, please do are there any schreyers on this board who can give some inside information?

How many honors classes and how many huge classes will a freshman honors student typically get? (sorry to repeat)

well, the mandatory amount is 7 credits, 3 classes per year, freshman and sophomore years. The max number of credits you can possibly take per semester w/o an override is 18, but I think they recommend 14 for first-years. huge classes I think you can generally get out of through honors courses. it really depends what you have to take though-- generally non-honors science classes have a big lecture session 2x a week with hundreds of people (a lot of people don't even go to those because the notes are often available online), with a lab day with a much smaller class size. Math classes are limited at 50 people, foreign language ones at 25. I think english classes are around 30, but many of the other humanities will be huge sizes if they're not honors.

Thanks, astrophysicist2b! I think a person could feel really lost at penn state because of its size, but am hoping that schreyer would provide a smaller environment. Do the schreyer students tend to take classes together, or are they spread all among the other 40,000 students' classes? Also, normally upper level classes are considerably smaller...does this happen at penn state?

I am not in the honors college but I go to Penn State and have a lot of friends in the program. You can be as involved in the honors college as you want to be. Freshman get to live in Atherton or Simmons which are two of the nicest dorms on campus. The honors kids that I know are all really close with each other and have a much easier time finding their niche than the regular freshman. In terms of the money, the education, and the social life, I cannot imagine a better honors college.

I'm so excited! I got a letter in the mail today from the Eberly College of Science, so I figured it was something about an open house. But in the back of my mind there was hope....

I opened it and scanned the first line, saw the word "Braddock" and yelled, "I got the scholarship!" Woooooo! I thought that since I didn't get any info about it in my likely or acceptance letters from Schreyer, I didn't get the scholarship. But I did! Woooooo this is amazing... it's full tuition and room and board!

What were your stats Willow? And, how early did you apply for the school/financial aid?

nevermind, i found your stats above..how long ago did you apply, though?

Wow, that is very impressive willow, major congrats to you!

Thanks! I'm sooooooo excited - I never thought I'd get it because I'd heard that it was really hard. Wooooooooooooooooo ok I'll calm down now.

I applied to Penn State in August, but I didn't apply to Schreyer until a few days before the November deadline. Our computer crashed right before the app was due and I thought I wouldn't be able to apply! THEN our computer crashed on I believe December 29 - right when all of my other apps were due! This time I had my files backed up... ahh that was really not a fun time. But anyway, thank you sooo much for the congratulations!

I was away over the weekend so I just ran out to check my mailbox and I got the Braddock too! YAY! congratulations willow. this is indeed very very exciting. eep!

Any thoughts on this::
I was accepted to American U on a full tuition merit scholarship, which means I'm only paying $10,000 room and board.

But I also got into Schreyer, which is only about $15,000.
My family was expecting to be paying $40,000 a year for college, so this is all exciting, and the price difference isn't going to necessarily dominate my decision.

I know I want to go to grad-school and I'm majoring in poli sci and anthropology. Obviously Washington D.C. is a better city for this major ( and i'm more of a city girl myself), but I think is Schreyer program is better (although i hate football)

Any advice on what will look better for grad school (lots of internships in D.C. or the Schreyer name?) and also, which will be more challenging (i'm looking to not repeat highschool which was mostly easy classes)

Look at the internships held by schreyers in the DC area.

http://www.shc.psu.edu/currentstudents/professionaldevelopment/graduatedlist.cfm (held by students in the past)

I think PSU-Schreyer would be exceptional if you were looking for PoliSci/Anthro. Especially if you're going to grad school

Astrophysicist2b has taken some schreyer classes and (s)he could tell you how they are from experience.

thanks a lot, those links are great. i'm doing an overnight there and want to sit in on some classes. From what i hear the program is awesome, I just don't know if i'll be that happy in the middle of nowhere since i grew up in philadelphia. But i suppose there is always grad school to pick a fun city.
