Should I apply to Schreyer?

Not to sound stuck up, but I'm basically applying to Penn State University Park as a safety school. I think I'd be happy there anyway- I've been there before and everyone I know who goes there loves it. I've gotten some mail from Schreyer and assumed (incorrectly) that everyone who applies to PSU is considered, but as I was filling out the application I realized that it is an entirely separate application, essays and all. Can anyone tell me what the benefits of being in Schreyer are? It seems pretty selective. Just as a little background, I have a 2260 SAT and I'm in the top 5% (at least) of my class. I'm also out of state, if it matters. Basically, do I have a chance at Schreyer, and is it worth it?

Yes.

Academic $$, extra prestige (The SHC is well known), smaller honors classes, and a senior honors thesis that grad schools love to see.

^^
About $3500 in merit $$.

Pros: Scholarship cash, advanced registration (before anyone but the football players), improved research and academic opportunities, special housing and social options, prestige of honors degree and medal.

Cons: Required honors courses every semester, required thesis, minimum gpa to remain in program, full-on “nerd” status.

Going in as a freshman, I would strongly consider Schreyer - the pros are considerable, and it is easier to drop out of the program than it is to enter later on. Plus, if you enter later you don’t get the money. I would especially consider it if you are thinking of grad school - it is not a big asset in industry, but it is practically designed to prepare you for grad study.
