Dr. George Andrews is teaching MATH 231H this fall. He is a terrific teacher. I took 230H and loved it. The textbook is good, so you have that as a resource in case the class gets too hard (not to mention office hours, etc. as usual). I think Andrews knows what is appropriate and what isn't for students to be expected to know.

Yeah. I'm currently signed up for his regular Math 231 class, but I want to take his Math 231H since there is a lot of room left and I want to learn good stuff from him. Are you currently in SHC? I'm not, and I'm scared that the class will kill my gpa. Are the homework and exams proof-based or just similar problems from the textbook?

I had Dr. Aissa Wade for 230H. She did not give us proofs on exams or even homework for that matter. Might have been a few proofs on the hw from the book, but that was it. Of course, the class will vary from Professor to Professor. I do know that Andrews rocks, and I'd guess that it'd be worth taking a class taught by him. The decision is up to you.

When in the honors program does it feel like your kind of outcasted from the rest of teh penn staters. If your not going to graduate school, is there a point to doing it anyway?

My s and I just returned from a college visit and one of our appointments was with the Schreyer Honors College. One of the key perks is that the honors students have first priority to the classes (when it is time to enroll in classes) and has the opportunity to take honors courses that are much smaller and concentrated. Not necessarily more difficult, but the professors are much more interested in teaching a small class of honor students than a huge lecture class of 200+. The honors college offers excellent advisory services, upgraded study areas, upgraded dorm living, and many other nice features. The automatic scholarship for being a Schreyer Honors Scholar is $3500.00 per year. We were quite impressed. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

how good is SHC?
I'm trying to find SHC's ranking but I can't seem to find it.

when i visited psu, they said graduating from schreyers is the equivalent of graduating from an ivy league school

^^I heard it was the top three honors college, but that was from a few years ago.

if you applied before the priority deadline (11/30) when will we find out. i think i remember reading somewhere that notifcations are in february but i'm not positive....

late Feb. I heard last year around 2/28. You shouldn't hear too much earlier as the SHC tends to notify everyone about the same day.

thanks. i can't waittt

I'm curious if you can still apply to SHC considering you've already applied and have been accepted to Penn State? The deadline is March 30th for SHC.

I just got back from visiting Penn State, and I really liked it, a lot more than I thought I would, and SHC seems great, but I was just wondering if, like Mcubed23 asked, the Schreyer's kids are sort of their own group, or do they assimilate nicely into the university? Also, does anyone know from experience whether it is better to accept the honors housing or opt to dorm in the regular freshman dorms? When i was walking around the honors dorms, there were a lot of signs that emphasized that everything was to be quiet for studying, did this bother anyone/ detract from the college experience?

< Scheyer Student

Being part of the Schreyer Honors college doesn't make you become segregated from the rest of the student body. I have lots of friends living in different dorms and majoring in different things. Being in the honors college is just a little extra perk to Penn State student life. I opted for housing in the honors dorms freshmen year. Its a little quiet at times and I sometimes have to go to other dorms to have some fun but having the facilities for studying/comp lab quickly trained me how to be an efficient student.

I am not living in honors housing next year as I got a quad in north. But I would definetley suggest it for freshmen. Compare it to east where it is very hard to get work done on the weekends.

and sillyworld: you can still apply to the SHC but since you are applying after the priority date (late Nov) you will not be considered with the first round of acceptances coming back at the end of the month. You will have to wait a while longer.

@ cwryan1
Ah, I see. Thanks so much for the reply.

Any word from SHC? Anyone know when stuff will be mailed out?

2/28......

Hi All (especially cwryan1 - you always have the right answers!) Does the SHC notify by email, U.S. Mail, or do they post it on the student PSU log on account? Thank you in advance. By the way, does PSU have classes on President's Day?

Phillyareamom

YOu will find out by U.S. mail. It will be a large packet of papers with info on the college etc. Although I do believe that my mom, during her numerous calls to the financial aid office, accidentally on purpose found that I had received several Schreyer related scholarships before I was actually notified of my acceptance (She diddn't tell me though, I had to sweat it out till the 28th).

And yes, PSU does have class on President's day.

I'm glad to hear they don't post it online. I think online notification ruins the whole process; I want to have a physical letter to either a) wave around in spontaneous bouts of joy, or b) burn (:
