I was wondering how is the accounting program at oneonta? it is a 3+2 so i dont know what to think of it. So if anyone can tell me how good, rigorous etc accounting is that would be great. thanks

It is a good program w/ great professors--most of whom are PHd's. SUNY Oneonta has had a very good pass rate on the CPA exam compared to the other SUNY's.

You can do a 5 yr program and graduate w/ a bachelors. The top students get jobs at the top accounting firms.

You can do 5 yr and not get masters?

That is correct. The professional accounting major is a 150 credit hour program leading to a bachelors degree.

Morris, I really see that as an issue. Yes, NY state is now (or within a year, but certainly for this years entering class) requiring 150 hours. Most other states also require or will require the 150 hours. However, it is far far more advantagsous to also get a masters. I am surprised to hear that Oneonta can not accomodate this. As a CPA, I would strongly recommend to anyone that they look for a program where they also get a masters. This is important for the person who will work in a cpa firm or in other places, like financial instutions (and yes they will come back). Yes you can get hired, yes you can become a cpa, but down the road it will cut down on marketability. Some firms may make room for non-Masters, but I would suspect that is so they dont have to pay as much down the road.

Actually the debate many students are dealing with is do they make certain they get an MBA and not just a Masters in Accounting. Other students are getting bachelors, starting work, and going to school at night. There are a lot of options, but to me, spending 5 yrs in school full time and not getting masters is not at top of list.

Good luck.

the 3+2 program is a bachelors from oneonta and a masters in another school, typically binghamton

DDawg -- That makes sense -- what you have to do is determine does eveyone who wants get into the Binghamton program, that is a a tough program to get into.

Ddawg, let me try a little more. Is Oneonata a good school, Yes.

These would be your options, as I see it -- go to Oneanta get good grades for first 2 years, transfer to Binghamton, other choice, see what other 2/3 programs they have.

If nothing viable, consider other transfers.

and you do always have the 5 yr bachelors program.

kayf, i am a 2nd year transfer student so i could do that, but i i really would want to go to binghamton for the masters program. But lets say i dont get in the program and decide to get a masters somewhere else not affiliated with oneonta would a bachelors there get me into a decent graduate program.

My opinion - a bachelors with good grades from Oneonta should get you into a decent grad program – the 2/3 programs do save you a year. Good luck.

Back in the day (LOL), SUNY Albany was the SUNY to choose for accounting. I wonder if it’s still known for their accounting program.

The cooperative program Oneonta has with Binghamton is a 3/2 program. Three years at Oneonta and 2 at Binghamton. A student must be accepted at Binghamton. Acceptance depends on Oneonta grades, GMAT scores, references, etc. If a student does not get accepted at Binghamton he/she has the option of staying at Oneonta for the 150 credit hours and graduating w/ a professional accounting degree and will be qualified to take the CPA exam.

Oneonta professional accounting majors have gotten jobs in recent years, including students graduating this year, at Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, etc.

Morris –

Experience of “recent years” will likely not be indicative of next year or two. In any event, the option to transfer seems good, with a backstop to stay on.

I agree with NYSmile, though, there are other suny’s such as albany where students dont to worry about transferring and have established 3/2 programs and have more established accounting programs.

yea i know oneonta isnt as reputable as albany for accounting but as a transfer student i lacked accounting class hours to get in, because i wasnt always an accounting major. That is why my search really is other schools plus oneonta.

Its certainly reputatable – and if you get good grades, you will have options.

Why not try accounting major at SUNY-Buffalo, as far as i know, it has a top ranking business school there !!

buffalo is too cold that is why i disregarded buffalo and oswego, otherwise they are good schools
