What stuff is there to do?
Whats around?
Is it safe?

Hey,

I’m a freshman in the college.

What stuff is there to do?
There’s lots to do on Emory’s campus, and lots to do in Atlanta. In terms of extracurricular stuff, there’s a club for just about everything at Emory, including club and intramural sports teams. There’s also plenty of fun stuff to do on the Emory campus… swimming at the Clairmont pool, tossing a frisbee on the quad, a bike ride through Lullwater park (students can rent bikes for free), jogging in the surrounding residential area, frat parties and greek life, grabbing lunch or dinner in Emory Village, etc. Freshman stick around campus most of the time, but if you have the itch to get off campus, Atlanta has a lot to offer… the nightlife is incredible, and there’s fun stuff to do on the weekend like going to the Coke Museum, the Georgia Aquarium (largest in the world!), going to a Football game at the Georgia Dome (or a baseball game at Turner Field… or a Hawks game… or a Thrashers game… or a game at Georgia Tech… or if you’re feeling extra adventurous… make it down to UGA), or shopping at the Buckhead mall. It’s hard to list all of the stuff to do, but rest assured, there’s something for everybody at Emory and something for everybody in Atlanta.

Whats around?
Emory is located in a suburb of Atlanta called Decatur. I say Emory’s in the suburbs because it is in a really nice residential area, but it’s really right in the city… only a 15 minute ride from downtown. Emory also has Atlanta mailing addresses. In terms of what’s around it… the Decatur/Druid Hills area is really nice, pretty, and quiet. There’s actually quite a bit to do in the area right around Emory… local bars and clubs, local restaurants (my favorite is this place called Brick Stone). But you don’t have to go far to get to Little Five Points (neat funky area of ATL), or downtown.

Is it safe?
Yes, Emory is very safe. The crime average in Decatur in 2008 was 311.4, compared to a U.S. average of 320, and the Emory campus is even safer. Emory runs a free 24/7 shuttle service to and from anywhere on the campus (including the Clairmont campus). To be honest, most students just use it because they’re too lazy to walk from one place to another, but if you feel uncomfortable walking at night (or even in the day), just give Emory Escort a call and they’ll pick you up.
