I’m sure every college has its own niches, but do you feel that UPenn has a strong artistic atmosphere? The school isn’t necessarily known for its arts, but would an artist feel stifled there, and is it a place where people can be creative and unique? Furthermore, is there a strong activist sentiment on campus?
Thank you!
There are a lot of creative people at Penn. Before giving an irrelevant answer, I am wondering what type of art you have in mind (Painting, sculpture, performance)?
There are certainly activists on campus, but I don’t think I would say there is a strong activist sentiment overall.
I plan to double major in music and English (also considering a minor in art history). But I just meant all the arts in general.
There is a lot of support for the arts in general. For performing arts you might learn more here: http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/pac/
Here is a link for prospective students who are writers. Kelly Writer’s House is involved in recruiting and can support an application. http://writing.upenn.edu/wh/highlights/prospective.php
Thank you! Yes, I have actually looked very intently at the Kelly Writers House (they seem to foster a great creative environment, and offer a variety of wonderful resources for writers), and I have even sent them some of my work. I will definitely look at the other link you posted!
Penn has a very strong arts community, although the quality of some of the groups is not as high as you might expect out of any Ivy League school.
In terms of an activist community, there are certainly causes / protests you can get behind, but campus opinion is quite polarized politically. This is not UCSC. You will likely experience pushback.
