I just recently gained admission to PSU at UP and I'm seriously considering going to this school. As you might have already guessed by the title, I'm gay, and I am wondering how is the gay scene at PSU? I know the surrounding city is no NYC but is the area conservative or liberal? How liberal/conservative is the state of Pennslyvannia? How friendly/open are students? I'm from Seattle, WA and I've never been to the east coast so enlighten me on anything I should know about. Is fashion styles different, similar, etc. Thanks.

The area immediately surrounding PSU (the State College Borough) is quite liberal. As you move farther away from campus the area is more rural and more conservative. I would guess that the state of Pennsylvania is historically blue, having large cities in the east (Philadelphia) and west (Pittsburgh). There is at least one gay bar, Chumley’s, on College Avenue, across from he university. There is a LGBT Alliance; you might contact them to get in touch with gay students and hear about their expeiriences. But, I’m sorry to say, it is not Seattle. . .

Surprising to me, but after googling this I found Penn State is listed as no. 7 on Newsweek’s list of gay friendly schools. It is reported to have a vibrant LGBT community. Apparently Penn State has recently approved a fraternity for gay men, Delta Lambda Phi.

However, the surrounding area of rural central pa is quite conservative/republican. Someone once said that Pennsylvania has Philadelphia on the East, Pittsburgh in the West, and Alabama in between.

I live in the Philly metro area, which is very gay friendly…so I’m not surprised to know that University of Pennsylvania here in Philly is rated the no. 1 gay friendly school in the nation!

That is nice to hear, pamom59.
