How Jack is Duke really? and stupid me worry about too-much-school-spirit...

(i am only trying to be honest as possible so i can make a right decision. and i am sorry if i might offend some one

i'd start from who am i. i am an asian, lover Punk / Rock (its souls, background, music, and all). also i shall confess that i do not like redneck , jock , elistist, and people who love themselves a little too much.

now. i've gotten into Cornell and Duke. and I shall say i really do like both school and of course i am in a happy dilemma. So Please help me if you can :D
(i will visit both school this month)

first of all, how "jock" is duke really???
and can someone comment on Princeton Review's "Little Race/Class Interaction"??
i dont believe what it says on the internet, however i can not just let it go as a lie. i really dont want to be a jock or be around prep-hs kinda kids. and i absolutely want to have all kinda interactions with lots different kinda people... with lots of creativities.. (in that aspects i also wonder how "conservative" duke and duram is.)

even though (stupid to say this about myself) i am more of people's person, i make clear about what i like what i dont like. and also i shall say i am kinda shy at a first sight, i dont go and try to find people or that kinda stuff..

second, i am "actually" worrying about having "too much of school spirit" in duke.
(i am more of art/theatre/film/music kinda person)
i heard people are going crazy whenever there are basketball games and trashed and bodypainting and screaming across a dorm and whatnot.
(i guess it's very stupid questions, how the school with the best basketball team can not have perhaps the highest / largest / toughest school spirit in the nation.. duh ?!)
well anyway is there any who feels me???

so.. please convince me. please.
(btw, i am from florida .. i know duke is THE great school!)

...

after all with some thought, i think i am worrying if cornell's too cold and duke's too hot. i want something in between i guess. (?!)

Sorry if some of my comments about rednecks and jocks have offended anyone in this board. (actually if it is, please post what you actualy think!)

Thanks in advance!!

i have the same worries about duke as you :)

lol I remember feeling the same way as a prefrosh, worried that I wouldn't fit in because I wasn't athletic but rather artsy and what not. Now I look back at all of that and laugh because I have more friends here than I could ever have imagined and my experience is completely different from how I thought it would be. The fact is, you make your college experience.

How true incollege88 :)

incollege, would you tell me a little more about art community or atmosphere at Duke and surrounding areas??

Does people dress up for classes and stuff?

p.s : after reading that link, i did get a better picture. Yet i still think it's different from other colleges (more jock-type, more sport-centered, more self-segeration, and on. yet doesnt mean it's overwhelming, but just more than other schools. what do you think?)

People don't dress up, it's all very casual. When I visited, everything was so laid back and chill - don't worry!

yeah... people don't dress up to go to class. people often wear sweatpants/flip flops to early classes. Most people make an effort to look respectable, but nothing more than what you see at any other school. people here definitely do have a very homogenous sense of style though (for the most part)

i just got back from the BSAI so my opinion may be a little distorted because there was an usually large concentration of blacks/latinos at duke last weekend...to make a long story short i woudl say it did like it was a giant fashion as some girls would change outfits three times a dayand people did dress up for class...also the little race interaction thing is self propelled...the minority communties are just really close and tend to move in herds, kinda like in hs...that being said their were def. blacks that hung out with whites and vice versa...also i would say that duke is pretty jock orientated....not that you can't fit in if you are not but a majority of the guys were like friggin CK models with their bodies and the girls were like supermodels...lol i love duke
