I got waitlisted and I really want to know when I can know my decision and if it's probable I'll get accepted. I'm really happy with the school I'm planning to commit to right now, but if I get into wash u I'll reconsider.

Can anyone say whenabouts decisions will come out and how likely it is to get accepted off the waitlist?

It is not at all likely to be accepted off the waitlist. There are thousands on the waitlist, and WashU often doesn’t take anyone off it. Treat it as a rejection for practical purposes.

Its cus i thought Wash U would accept more people off the waitlist because a) they waitlist a lot of applicants, and b) I believe that a lot of people turn down Wash U offers because they get into better schools? Top student in my school will turn down Wash U for Stanford - if not for Stanford, it might’ve been Duke.

marcdvl says that its a less than 1% chance people get accepted, but how many people do?

If a school, let’s say, has 1000 admission spots, it does not admit just 1000 kids. It might admit 1200 kids, because it knows from its statistics from prior years that 200 won’t wind up attending.

So while it is true that some people will decide not to go to Washington University once they learn they have also earned admission to Harvard, unfortunately, that may not open up a spot, because Washington University has already taken that possibility into account.

Putting so many people on the wait list gives people false hope.

I read that with respect to Johns Hopkins, the admission rate off the wait list is often one percent.

If that is usually the case, then why place 100 times more people on the wait list than you probably need to be on that list?

For the next couple months, you have nothing to lose by staying on the waitlist.
Last year I was waitlisted at WashU, and after being rejected at my four other “reach” schools, I thought I was doomed for a fifth rejection. But that wasn’t the case–I’m now a WashU student.
ANYTHING can happen!
Just make sure you continue to show big interest in the university (WUSTL Admissions eats that up probably more than anyone else).

iwantwustl - same here!! i absolutely adore that school. however, the statistics i heard aren’t very convincing…so i’m trying not to get my hopes up too much.

I flew to WashU last week to show interest, toured the campus that day, at least I think so, made a decent acquaintance with one of the admissions officers, albeit not my own. She told me that year after year they were able to go to the waitlist, so I’m not too convinced when people in this thread post that nobody got in two years ago. I doubt I misheard her words because my father and myself did spend a substantial amount of time talking to her. I sent an email after flying home the next day to the officer to come off as a truly interested and gratified applicant, as well as try to be friendly and personable. A week after that I sent another email to my admissions processor to update my file with a national award and CC’d a copy to admissions officer I met there as well as my own admissions officer, both of whose emails I got from the office there. The admissions officer I met there said that it is her job to champion the applicants, so hopefully she’ll speak up for me when time comes around to selecting students off the waiting list.
