I am working on this "why tulane" essay and i am not sure how long the essay should be.

I also would like to get some idea from everyone about what should be mentioned in this kind of "Why XX school" essay. Should i talk about my intended major and relate it to the school? should i talk about the extracurricular activities in Tulane? Some people told me not to put too many flattering words or sentences in the essay. Is that true?

What are your reasons for applying to Tulane? I'll very appreciate it if someone can give some suggestion for this essay.

and BigKev it was optional but its better to write it because it tells the admissions office that you are seriously considering it as a school and not just using it as a safety.

as for what to write… write about why you want to attend tulane. for everyone it is different.

i just found out they actually have a 1000 char limit for this essay, but the one i already wrote has like 512 words and over 2000 char!!! OMG i am totally screwed now… i dont know how i can use less than 1000 char to show them that i REALLY wanna go to Tulane…

Is it possible that after i submit the shortened version I email my original one to the admission office? I mean, i really put a lot of effort on this essay and just wanna let the school know i really do want to go to Tulane!!!

I didn’t realize it was optional and I knew a bit about Tulane since my cousins go there so it took maybe 10 minutes? I was also rushing to do it the night of the EA deadline and didn’t really check it or anything lol. I was accepted w/a 25k/year scholarship so I guess it worked out :)

219120 - sure, you can communicate anything you want to your admissions officer. I mean it should be reasonable, but I see nothing wrong with what you propose. It is hard to not like enthusiasm!

Make your essay short. At first, i wrote this 1.5 page essay on why i wanted to attend tulane (it was amazing!). It turns out that there is a 1000 character limit so i had to cut out over half of it. I still got accepted though! Overall, make sure you write the essay solely for tulane… dont use an essay you used for another school and just change the name, they’ll notice. Basically, mine mentioned how i would help the community by volunteering in a different field than the usual community service. I had qualifying credentials so i’m not sure how much the essay helped me.

Hey guys,
I know this is a late reply, but I am applying to Tulane now and was wondering the same thing. I am using the Universal College App, and it says 0-6000 characters for the extracurricular essay and also the optional essay (common app was shorter). I was wondering if any of you used the Universal App and still cut you off at 1000 characters, or allowed you to write more? Thanks

DS is using the Tulane application. He didn’t see a character limit for the optional essay. He’s almost done with the essay - it will probably end up around 300 words or so, but is already at 1500 characters. Also wondering if anyone has more recent information (Fall 2012 application).

I applied recently and I uploaded my application essays rather than typing them or copying and pasting in there. My why tulane essay was 527 words and my personal statement was just under the 500 word limit. I didn’t get any notification of a 1000 character limit.
