the main one. they say 250-500 but thats REALLY short
what if mine's like.. 650? is that bad?

Mine was around 650 as well. Try to keep it between 500-1000 and you should be fine. Just make sure you write well, and make sure you are being concise if you feel your essay is a little bit long winded.

1000 is much too long. Anything over 750, in fact, I feel like would be taking a risk. If possible, try and keep it under 550 (length + 10%).

Mine was about 580 I think and I got in.

I got mine into about 450 words and I got in. Being short means you're able to make your point succinctly without going on and on... so, just make it as short as you can while still conveying all the information.

I do not think essays should exceed one page single spaced with margins around .7 on all sides.

I cut my commonapp essay from 790 to 530 for Columbia. We'll see how that goes in RD, I guess.

this advice is spot on. Do not to go over 750 words.

hahaha...why not .75 margins? this is such a ridiculous post.

I thought that 500 words was a pretty clear cut request, but I guess it wasn't. If only I knew that a month ago! Mine ended up at 499 after a couple painful rounds of editing/cutting =D

My essay was 758 words and I got in. However, it only took up one page (standard 1 inch margins)

Well, they say 250-500 words, or 1-2 pages.
Neither 250-500 words fills up 1 page.
And since they said 1-2 page, my essay is 950 words and it's 1 page and 1/4 - quite a fast read anyway.

950 words is a bit much.

Unless you're sure that you have expressed yourself as concisely and succinctly as possible, I would do some revision.

how long is your EC short answer and why columbia?

The EC short answer is limited to 300 chars and the Why Columbia is limited to 600 chars.

^^Both of these limits are probably the most frustrating that you will encounter.

Hey...after reading these posts.. I just had one question.. even though CU says 500 words max.. its okay to go over this limit? Would they penalize it for exceeding the wc?
