Well, the FAFSA gets sent to them, but they might not have started to access the information, so it just waits until they start working on it.
The IRS data retrieval tool should now be available, if you have filed your tax return and it was processed then you can change “will file” to “already filed” and use the DRT to import your tax return info right into the FAFSA.Then resubmit FAFSA. It shows the schools that accurate tax information is reported on the FAFSA.
I JUST imported my school’s FAFSA info today. It takes time for schools to get their software updated & ready to receive the new year’s FAFSA batches. If you put the school’s correct code on the FAFSA, and if your FAFSA didn’t reject, the school has it … they just may not have loaded it in yet. I do have a caveat: I have encountered students who had some odd issue that kept their FAFSA from being connected to them … for example, they had an incorrect SSN in the school’s system. Those are few and far between, but if your school doesn’t show your FAFSA as receive by early March, you’ll want to call & make sure they do have it for you.
I’ve had a few students complain to me that they removed their first batch of schools from their FAFSA before those schools were able to access the SAR. I’ve recommended following up with their FA counselors at each school before sending the FAFSA off to the next batch of schools. Tedious, but it’s worked so far. Apparently not every school has a mechanism for auto-saving every SAR received before their school’s code is removed(?) Either that or this is some weird technical glitch.
We’re about 50-50 with FAFSA receipt showing up on portals (if it’s even logged at all).
Because we need to submit for a few more schools, I ended up emailing the FA offices at each school where we had not yet received confirmation. In two cases they’d downloaded it but not updated the portal. In the other four cases, they’re still waiting to download. So we’re not going to remove any of the ones that are still pending, just the ones that have confirmed.
Every school has the FAFSA transactions they were sent, and they remain available to them even after the school codes are changed by the student on a subsequent transaction. If a school code is removed, that just means that when you send out the changes, the schools you removed don’t get the changes … but they definitely get the first transaction that you sent them. This I know for a fact.
OK, that’s good to know. It’s a little unnerving to be approaching the school’s Feb 15th deadline and still see “Not Received” on the portal. I need to call them about the IDOC ID, so I’ll ask about the FAFSA too.
