It takes me 3-4 hrs to study through a chapter in ap bio, ap psych and the same previously in ap world and apush.
Is this normal?

That depends on what you mean by study and how much you’re expected to know for class
For notes, a good 30 minutes of scribbling BS perhaps
I mean committing 90% to memory by studying.
@tau628 I wouldn’t worry if it is normal or not to take a while to read a chapter and understand the information. It really depends on the person. For example, there is a girl I know who has a very good memory, and she only needs to read things a few times to commit most of it to memory. On the other hand, I take more time to understand what I am reading.
Another factor is how long the chapters are. A 50 page chapter in a textbook is going to take much longer than a 20 page one.
In short: don’t worry too much about it unless it is taking too long for you to finish the reading and other work.
My textbook chapters are about 30 pages for AP World, so quality notes and studying is about an hour and 30 minutes if I turn my phone off lol
@tau628 are you comfortable and confident in class reiterating what you read? Basically, after spending 3-4 hrs on reading/note-taking, do you remember most of the stuff you read or is it all a blur?
For me, reading for a long time is useless in most cases. I’m in a bunch of AP’s as well, and I really don’t have the time to spend 3-4 hrs on HW each night (hockey everyday!!). Instead of reading every single word of every single page in every single textbook (Bio, Macro, etc.) i go on YouTube (Bozeman science, Khan academy…). It really helps me finish HW in a reasonable time, say 1-2 hours. I’d say 1-2 hrs for 4 APs each day is pretty good
So after I’m done with notes and reading I try to recall most of it and it’s somewhat a blur. But then when I look over said notes for 10 min, it all comes back pretty clearly. That is to say, the more I look at those notes, the more I’m able to recall until I’m able to go in order of headings. It’s just once I study one subject I get behind in the others, and then I catch up on the others only to be behind on the others that I wasn’t studying…a vicious cycle that resolves itself in the wee hours of the morning.
sigh end of rant
@BPearlman97 I totally get what you mean. It’s just I feel almost guilty if I don’t read every word of every page as though that one thing will come and haunt me on a unit test or something. I feel like in the tests everything is important!
@tau628, if the 3-4 hrs is effecting your grades and causing too much stress, find a way to get through everything faster. You usually don’t need to know everything that the textbook has in it. Especially for AP Bio, which I’m taking this year too, the textbook has a ton of convoluted, annoying sections to read. I skim through, outline quickly and then hit up Bozeman on YouTube. Instead of an hour of work, it’s 30 minutes (20 reading, 10 mins watching vids).
2 to 3 hours cause I might have to watch some YouTube for more information on a particular subject
Depends on the book
That’s how long I usually spend. I don’t understand people who can breeze through a chapter in an hour.
If I study and note thoroughly, and it’s a pretty thick text, two hours with my phone hidden (except maybe for Pandora). Cut out distractions and it’ll probably go by more quickly
@viewthroughkohl0
I would say my only source of distraction is looking up stuff online (aka define something, look at a video better explaining something, etc). Other than that, it just takes me a while to process I suppose.
Yeah I’m talking 50 pages of interesting dryness.
