We are coming for early admit student day in Jan. We have a hotel near the government center metro stop (green line direct to bC). Wondering how much time we should allow to get to our registration table on the main campus from the metro. We register at Devlin Hall.

Any help would be great. Hope we make it to Boston in general. We are flying from So Cal thru Chicago (ugh - best we could do using frequent flyer miles). Pray for no snow for us.

At least an hour seeing as you probably don't know how the "T" operates. Non-Bostonians seem to think that it is the most random/confusing public transportation system in the U.S. But we love it up here in Beantown.

Like Dogwood said, be sure that you take the BC branch of the green line, because if I can remember correctly it splits into three different branches. Just ask someone in the subway. Believe it or not, we aren't as mean as people think we are.

I'd give myself an hour and a half. The "B" line is miserably slow. If you can, take the "D" line to the "Reservoir Stop" and wait for the Commonwealth Ave shuttle. That will take you directly to campus as it stops right in front of Robsham Theatre.

Since you've never been to BC/Boston, I would HIGHLY recommend not doing the D line/transfer thing. It's just more confusing.

I take the B line from BC to Govt Center almost every day during the school year as I'm a BC student and work near there. I allow myself an hour, and I've only been late once. It's true that the B line is MISERABLY slow around BU, but an hour should give you enough time. If you want to be safe, allow yourself an hour and a half. Check out a map of the campus and bring it with you to find the building when you get to campus. I believe the one on bc.edu shows where the T stop is as well.

It also depends on the time of day. If it's rush hour -- definitely allow an hour and a half. If it's not, an hour should be fine.

The trains run less frequently, but not drastically so. Like...instead of being every 6 minutes they will be every 10 minutes.

The good thing there is that you won't have to deal with rush hour traffic and you'll have to deal with less BU students on the BU stretch (sorry, but it's really what takes the longest. I've lived here for a year and when they're not here my commute is almost cut in half). If it's early in the day/morning it'll go REALLY fast, and will even skip stops if no one requests them/there's no one waiting.

Thanks for the info. I think allowing ourselves 1 1/2 to get there door to door will give us time to look around if we are early. Now, can you make the weather cooperate in Chicago & Boston so we can actually get there.

Ugh !
We went thru this last February with two such events in Boston. When I saw the dates first thing I thought was snow, which of course it did. Luckily we were driving and left ahead of the storm
We parked the car at the hotel and left it until it was time to leave for the weekend
You can also view the " T " schedule on their website:

sbrownell: Yes, allow 1.5 hours.. should only take 30 mins on a Sunday morning, but the T is like a rickety old tram sometimes. The B line that folks are talking about on here is a subway that eventually crawls out of the ground and turns into what is essentially an on-street trolley that crosses intersections, etc. A foot of snow or a deviant automobile driver who blocks the track can cause delays. And Boston drivers are brutal (you'll learn this if your daughter goes to BC).

If you happen to get to campus early, then go to the little coffee/sandwich shop that BC has at the bottom of the stairs (you'll see the stairs once you cross onto the campus)....it's something like 800 steps up the side of a mountain (j/k). Having a cup of coffee there is the best way to kill a 1/2 hour if you want. I am assuming it's open on Sundays.

I believe my recently-admitted younger sister will also be at the same event, with my 'rents, so you will likely see each other without knowing it! Good luck!

Thanks, we are going to cab to Tufts on Monday to see the campus while we are in Boston. But really wanted to try the T. I like the idea of taking a cab there and the T home. We will see how the weather is though. If its bad, do you think the T is better?

yeahhh the B line is pretty painful but it will leave you right at the bottom of campus which is great for people who have never been to BC before, its pretty hard to get lost. plus, the ride through BU is pretty so youll have lots to look at on the T.

the coffee place on the side of the stairs (hillside cafe) that gabbagabbahey mentioned is closed on sunday. but theres a place called french press coffee outside of BC campus right when you get off the T if you wanted to kill some time. also a dunkin donuts on that strip.
