How long does it usually take to get your official financial aid award?

Almost immediately after getting accepted to Michigan I got an estimated financial aid award. It was very very generous to say the least. That was in mid February. They requested that I send in my parent’s 2015 tax transcript before they send the official award letter. Due to some difficulties stemming from the fact that my parent’s moved since they filed their last tax return it took a long time to get the tax transcript from the IRS. I finally submitted it in person about a week or two ago and it showed up as received in wolverine access immediately.

Since I need to sign a housing contract shortly I was wondering if anyone had any insight into about how long it takes for them to send you an official financial aid award after you submit all the required document?. I don’t see any reason why my financial aid award would be different from the estimated one because it’s not like I lied on my FAFSA or CSS profile, I filled them out looking at their tax returns. Still it seems a little irresponsible to sign a lease before I know for sure that I’ll be getting that grant money.

It will be fine. Official letter should be along soon. If you feel weird about signing the housing contract, give financial aid a call and explain this concern…they’ll put your mind to rest.

Don’t expect a revised FA notice before May. After that, it may be revised further, for instance, when the new tuition or R&B rate is determined. My D got 5 revisions on her freshmen FA package.
