I am going to start community college in the fall and wondering if I have a good chance of finishing the GE and Pre-Reqs in two years to transfer. My high school counselor said the average time for a community college student is 3 years now. Is this true?

I wanted to take a couple of classes this summer to get an early start, but unfortunately, incoming freshmen don't get priority registration and by the time I was allowed to register, every single transferable summer class was full with 30+ people already on the wait-list.

If I take 5 classes a semester (about 15 units?), for two years, plus two classes next summer, can I transfer?

PS. Is it common for universities to accept transfer students who have not completed 100% of the pre-reqs?

Thank you!!

People transfer at many stages:

Spring of fr year: very few
As a soph or jr or somewhere in between: the majority of transfers
As a jr+: relatively few, some colleges will not accept students who have more than 2 yrs of transferable credit and most people want to spend at least a couple years at their transfer college.

It’s likely that the average time at a CC is 3 years due to the fact that many people do not go full time or are taking remedial courses that will not transfer. If you take a full load (ca. 15 units/sem of transferable credits), you could transfer in 1 year as a soph, but your chances will likely be better after 2 yrs as a jr transfer.

Some colleges have prerequisites, others do not. You need to go to the websites of the colleges you’re interested in and see what they look for/require in transfer applicants.

Many people are able to get all their pre-reqs done in two years and successfully transfer. A lot depends on your cc- in some schools, the classes fill up too fast to get everything done quickly.

I’m transferring after 3 regular semesters and 2 summer semesters.
