Hi there so my son got into a pretty competitive state school. He was accepted about a month ago and received no merit ending. When is it to soon to ask for merit and do schools usually give it if you call?
My son got into civil engineering program, he has 4.0, aps, math and science club as well as perfect score on his act.
Did you already receive the financial aid package yet and you’re saying that they didn’t include any merit? Or you haven’t received the package yet and you want to call to see if you can get it?
I was told if he was to get merit, he would have got an email soon after acceptance and it’s been a month. He did not get financial package yet.
Oh ok, then I’d just call the financial aid office to verify this. This happened to my DD22 for Purdue. We were waiting on her financial aid letter then found out before we received it that if she were to get a merit scholarship it would have come with her acceptance letter.
This is a school by school method. It can be a few ways but usually with the acceptance letter. Some come later…sometimes months later.
Since you didn’t name the school, you really give no one a basis to answer - so your best bet is to - look on your portal or contact your AO. They may - or may not send you to FA.
Good luck.
Depending on the school, this record could net anywhere from a full ride, to nothing for merit. Typically though, you would have heard by now. I’d reach out to the school.
And make sure everything is correct. Back in 2003, one of our kids got accepted to a college. Merit awards were supposed to come with acceptances. One of our kid’s friends got a large merit award and our kid with higher stats didn’t. We called…somehow a number on the kid’s SS (which was used at that time) was switched around. Because of this inconsistency, they had not awarded merit and would not have done need based either. BUT it was easily corrected…And our kid got the merit award.
In your case, I would just call and ask if/when merit awards are sent. If they have been sent, and awards are not guaranteed….your kid might not have received one.
