How many AP tests do you take before you go to a very good college? (college equivalent to HYP)
Should they all be above 4?

I don’t think there is a set number. Anyway, as you know, admissions aren’t solely dependent on academics.

Ideally, you should be getting all 5s but I think 4 is a good enough score.

My friend Jorge got into MIT, number 8 in the class, 2100 SAT

junior year:
Physics C Mechanics (5), Chemistry (4), US History (idk), English Language (idk)

senior year:
Physics C E&M, Music Theory, US Government, Macroeconomics, Calculus BC

My friend Katie got wait-listed at MIT, number 4 in the class, 2090 SAT

sophomore year:
World History (2)

junior year:
English Language (3), US History (3), Statistics (4), Physics C Mechanics (5), Calculus (5)

senior year:
US Government, Physics C E&M, English Literature, Macroeconomics, Chemistry, Computer Science

Katie’s ECs are a lot better, but Jorge is Hispanic. . .

^ dude, bad idea to reveal the name of your friends.

my cousin took 0 ap tests and go into harvard. but then again, he was in the IB program lol.
however, I think 8-10 ap classes/tests should be around the top universities range. but then again, some schools dont offer as much. so the answers is “it really depends”. try to at least take half of what your school offers.

take as many as possible. Your main goal is to maximize the amount of college credits you can get through the AP program. That way when you get to college you get to have credit for many classes.

This guide is helpful:

thanks killer, it is a good link.

I was accepted at Harvard and had 11 AP tests taken in total. Scores were fine but if you’re applying to the HYP, I seriously doubt the APs contribute significantly to the admission panel’s decision. All candidates at that level are strong academically.

I only took 2 AP exams and got into Penn (Wharton).

Colleges do look at what classes your high school offers. You won’t be faulted for not taking 5 APs in one year if your school doesn’t offer that. In my HS, juniors are only allowed to take 2 APs maximum, while seniors can only take 4 APs maximum. So colleges can only see 2 AP scores from us by the time they admit us. ED schools don’t even see our first report card of senior year by the time they admit us, so they don’t see the grades of our AP classes in senior year.
