How many APs can you safely self study in one year?

plan on self studying these four APs next year along with these classes. (10th grade)

Classes
Hn English 10
Hn Preclaculus
AP Latin
AP World History
Advanced Guitar Ensemble
PE 10
Hn Chemistry

APs
Biology
European History
Environmental Science
Human Geography

Do you think that this is too much?
Should I drop Human Geography because it is such a bogus AP?
Should I add on or switch out any of the APs I have listed here?

Your help is greatly appreciated

Is next year your first year for taking AP’s

Yes. It will be the 1st year that I take AP classes, but not the first AP tests that I take. I am currently self studying psychology.

Try Chemistry since you’re taking Honors Chemistry. Just read into textbook with more detail. Drop biology.

You sure? I heard that AP chem was really hard. Also, how much would I be missing from the labs?

I hear AP Chem is like introductory chem, with a little more detail, well, in my school it is.

The labs aren’t like bio labs. It’s calculation based anyways. I think Chem would be a good idea. The AP isn’t that much harder than honors. It’s a LOT harder than regular though.

Ok, so I think I’ll switch out Bio with chem, but what about self studying AP Euro? How difficult is it to self study?

If you enjoy history, it shouldn’t be hard.

dont do four self studies. do one for now. u dont really need to put more pressure on urselve. im self studying two and i realized that i shouldnt have self study the other one since its pretty hard for me (even though everyone said it was easy. hmph!) if i were u, take it easy. ur already taking two exams in ur sophomore year. just add one that u know for sure u can handle. from there on, look for clubs or sports u want to do, but dont waist ur life studying for ap exams u didnt take a class for…

For chem, it depends on how solid your math background is. That paired with a good honors chem will prep you for AP fine.
If I were you, I wouldn’t self study euro or biology. World may cut it depending on your school. Euro has an insane amt of info, plus it’s nice to have a class to learn social, political, economic trends rather than from a textbook. And bio just has tons of terms and info that you need to distinguish.

I could start a little early.

I’m self-studying bio after honors. It’s not that bad if you start early and dedicate time daily to review. I would advise against Euro history. You could take environmental science instead.

i know a freshman self-studying 5 AP’s.

If this is your first year then just take AP’s and don’t self study until you know how its like and know whether you can hand more AP’s

I’m self studying psychology right now. It’s not bad at all. I know I can handle more, but I’m not sure how much.

If you want to major in natural science or science when you’re in college i would just take the actual AP’s (Bio)and maybe you can self study geography and history courses.

Classicalguitar, classicalguitar, classicalguitar, tsk, tsk tsk…

It’s great that you’re taking AP classes and that you’re motivated. But you’re making a mistake that’s going to hurt your college prospects. You’re obviously taking AP courses to improve your college prospects, which is great. But the point at which these AP courses start cutting into other areas is the point at which you need to cut down on them. You have a challenging courseload as it is and there’s no way you’re going to perform as well in them with all those classes. Studying for those APs will undoubtedly take time away from studying for your in-school courses and your grades are the most important factor in your college application process. At best, you’ll find yourself studying for these courses on the weekends and ultimately, high school is meant to be fun and you should have a social life and opportunity to purse ECs instead of studying for so many AP courses. Maybe spend that time doing ECs or volunteering because that will help your application more.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t self study AP courses, because I think it will help you. I’m saying you should cut down. Definitely take European History- there’s a multitude of reasons as to why you should take it. 1) Essay/DBQ format is very similar to the AP World History exam you’re taking 2) Some of the knowledge in Euro History you’ll have studied in World History 3) you can improve your grade in World History because you’ll really know the European part and tests in that class can be a lot easier and you’ll be more successful.

That’s a really strategic move to make and you can improve your AP and class grades at the same time so without a doubt, I would take it. Forget Biology, I’m sure your school offers it next year (you can take two sciences if you’re desperate to take it) and you’ll know it better if you have a teacher. Pick one out of Environmental Science and Human Geo, I’d personally pick Environmental Science simply because it’s different to AP Psychology, AP World History, AP Latin and AP Euro History- it’s the most ‘science-y’ and probably the more respected of the two.

Definitely take Euro History, scrap Biology and pick one out of Environmental Science and Human Geo.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I will take AP Euro, but do you think that I should take AP chem instead of an environmental science. I’m taking Honors chem next year and I think I could work it in with that. That way I would be self studying only 2 AP tests, both of which have a direct connection and benefit to classes that I will be taking.

Yeah, forget about Environmental Science then if you’re taking Honors Chem and do AP chem. Does your school offer AP Chem/AP Bio?
