How many Athlet Recruites are Admistted

Does any one know what percentage of the class is comprised of atthlet recuites?

20%?

lols (10 char)

Pretty sure the answer is 50%. Just my impressions.

hahah a lot less at Brown than at other schools… 20 percent is more other ivies and other D1 schools. Likely letters for athletes are really hard to come by at Brown, in fact.

How good at a sport do you have to be to be a varsity athlete at Brown?

depends… but very good

Not THAT great. There’s a kid from my school playing there and he’s a fantastic player, but nothing too too out of the ordinary. He was captain and such, but I would argue that there were more than a few kids in our state that were equally as talented.

I think Brown went for him rather than the others because he was also a very smart and mature individual. Very personable too.

Does not that great mean around D2 lev

No, Brown is a D1 school with some excellent athletic teams, competing in the Ivy League. For example, Brown women’s crew has won more NCAA championships than any other school.

For football, wrestling, basketball, etc., where the powerhouse schools are big state schools, our athletes are probably roughly match up to D2 athletes. This doesn’t preclude walk-ons: our championship winning women’s crew team is comprised largely of walk-ons (some who’ve never rowed before) and I know walk ons for both men’s and women’s fencing, and we do pretty well there too. But money-making sports we don’t attract the same type of athlete (because we don’t really make money on them like larger schools do).

however, many rowers from the Junior National Team choose brown over it’s competitors because of the quality of rowing… so agreed, depends on the sport, as with all schools.

The Brown women’s rowing team is not comprised of walk-ons. In fact it would be highly unusual for a walk-on to row competitively at Brown. Yes, it happens, but it’s rare. Women’s rowing would have anywhere from 8 to 11 recruits in any given year. Yes, that’s per year.

Brown fields around 35 interscholastic teams. Granted they may not all be allocated 8-11 recruits (i.e. equestrian), but certainly some teams are allocated many more (i.e. football). Brown is not much different than the other Ivies in this regard.

When you start factoring in all of the recruited athletes, significant legacies, children of the powerful, and underrepresented minorities, you can start to get a sense of why it’s so difficult getting in through the front door when applying for admission to Brown.

Browninfall:

I think you may be working off old data. Currently, out of 10 freshmen on the women’s crew team, 5 were walk-ons. There were 8 recruits at the beginning of the year, but three of them quit. It’s definitely not rare at all for walk-ons to row competitively. My roommate is one of those 5 walk-ons who are now on the full team, and absolutely loves it.

5 freshmen walk-ons is surprising and historically unusual. I may be wrong, but I don’t think that there was even 1 walk-on in any of the boats that won the last two national championships for Brown.

The fact that the year started off with 8 freshmen recruits ties in to my earlier post of the women’s crew team typically being allowed 8 - 11 recruits per year.
