And how easy/hard is this load for you?
Btw, what's the maximum amount of units you can take without needing a counselor's authorization?

It depends on the school that you’re in. Most students are Letters & Science, so their maximum is 19 units per quarter without authorization for more (though I believe it’s 18 in summer). I don’t think it’s likely that you’ll be allowed to exceed this cap until you have an established GPA or if you have a low GPA (< 3.0).

I took 19 units last quarter and did better in my classes than I did with lesser loads. Would I want to ask a counselor to exceed 19 units in the future? Probably not. But I don’t believe that making enrollment decisions just on the number of total units that you’d have to carry is sound advice. The difficulty and workload of the courses, obviously, are more important factors to consider. Probably the best way to get a taste of these two is to read reviews on BruinWalk or talk to people who have taken the courses that you’re interested in. Also, you might want to think about the kind of social life that you have. If you find yourself just “killing” a bunch of time during the day, why not save yourself money down the road and take an extra class?

I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend NOT taking more than 15 credits or 3 classes your first quarter. Adjusting to college is a bigger change than you might expect. Having to study for classes and not party your first quarter will majorly suck. Trust me, that’s what happened to me :(

I took 16 units my first quarter at UCLA and it was no big deal at all [ i got straight A’s]. If you pick good classes, with professors that aren’t too difficult [see bruinwalk.com ] you should be fine. Winter and Spring I took 17 and 18 units a quarter and got A’s, which also wasn’t too difficult to pull off. That was when i was a life science major though, D: life was easy back then… the unit cap for LS is 19.

I transferred to HSSEAS [the school of engineering] at the end of last year, and now i’m struggling with 14-16 units [still 4 classes a quarter] The unit cap for Engineering is 21 though

personally, i think you can take 4 classes, up to 18 units and do well, as long as you have the discipline to focus when you need to. If you put in the work (like… 5 or 6 hours a week for me, freshman year) you’ll get good grades whether you’re taking 3 or 4 classes. you might have more fun taking 3 though, just sayin XP

readysetPAUSE, if you dont mind me asking, which classes did you take for your first quarter? Can you recommend me a few easy A class?
